Re: Today's Pic (not 265-2011 but maybe close)

I had been looking for a medium standard zoom for my D700. Didn't know if I was going to go with the Tamron 28-75 or Nikon 24-70 or 28-300 Nik or Tam.
Found a used 28-80 for $50.00... How could I go wrong with this. Plus it's really light and does not scare people off like the 24-70 Nikon that I will eventually get.

Just a few shots with the new cheap lens.

I paid nearly 2K for the 24-70mm and can't say the photos are any sharper than the ones you've posted here with the $50 lens. May have to rethink future purchases! Your second photo has interesting subject matter.

Well, for the price I paid, I think I've got a bargain.
I have to deal with people and sometimes the big lens can scare them or make them look shy. And this little plastic thing is so so light also. I'm thinking of taping the Nikon and D700 black and removing the D700 camera strap to be a little more less visible.

Marcel, The Nikon 28-300 is a beast, and will scare the hell out of people. If this is not a typo let me know and I'll elaborate more on it, I have this lens.

Hi Rick, no, this was no typo. I was thinking of getting the 28-300 that would be equivalent to the 18-200 on DX. But I already have a 70-300, a 16-35, 50, 85, 105 macro, so I didn't want to spend too much for now (spent enough as it is with the NAS). And as much as I like a fast lens, I don't have to own it right now.
But how do you like the 28-300?

Really great shots. My favourite is the last one. And maybe it's just me, but I found the first shot not to be as sharp as the others. Still a nice shot, though. Good job, bud. :)
Great little lens you have there, at a great price. :)

But how do you like the 28-300?Marcel

First off for myself I would not get rid of this lens. It's on my camera 95% of the time. Most of my 365 photos since mid February have been taken with this lens. I go back and forth if I'm happy with this lens. I would have to say I love this lens. Maybe I'm just getting greedy on how much I can zoom in with this thing, on a D90 it's 35mm equivalent 450mm zoom so I can't complain on the quality of photos this lens can produce. I think when I bought it I was expecting more. Then again I don't know what I was expecting.

This lens is a beast, it long and heavy. It takes 77mm filters that should give you and idea how wide the front glass is on this thing. I put in a couple of photos of my D90 with a flash bracket and battery grip on to give you an idea how big it really is.

I find this lens loves a lot of light, and rightfully so seeing how the lens very quickly goes to f5.6 - by the time you're at 70mm you're at f5.0, and by 105mm you're at f5.3. This is the only thing I don't like about this lens.

This lens is perfect for people who need a large focal range to shoot a wide variety of subjects and don't want to have to change lens all the time. This is why I wanted this lens. With my 55-200 I found myself wanting more on the short end and a lot more on the long end.

Now when it comes to doing a crop zoom in Photoshop at 450mm your not going to get much more than actual pixels with this one, basically what you see is what you get.

This lens is good for someone who wants to travel light. What I mean by traveling light is just one lens maybe a flash and camera. The trade off to this is the weight of the camera and lens. Is this a walk around lens? That would depend on you. I have not had this lens out all day, I have had it out for extended periods of time and find myself carrying it with the neck strap wrapped around my wrist and holding the camera by the battery grip, and it did not seam to bother me. I have an all day outing planned for late May, after that I can tell you more.

The only regret I have about this lens is it's not fast glass. I should have rented one out before I bought one. If I would have done that I might not have bought one, and maybe held out for fast glass. If I would have done that then I be back in the same boat where I would want more on the short end. I will only own Nikon Glass, that's why I bought a Nikon, and I still love this lens and will make it work for me until I decide if I'm buying faster glass or not down the road. Right now I'm over budget this year on camera upgrades, so I have a whole year to decide what I'm doing.

Well, the temperature doesn't want to cooperate with me so I went for the wet shot. Shot again with the "cheap" 28-80 3.3-4.5. Did a little, well, maybe more than a little sharpening, but what the heck. ISO 200, 1/40s f36 hand held.

Here is today's pic for my piano people project.
D700, 3200 iso,1/80s f 4,8. Taken with the bargain 28-8- 3.3-4.5 Nikon. I did remove a few of my tools that were left on top of the piano just to remove distractions from highlights.

I like the water shot, great feeling of rushing water. The lady has striking eyes, great focus and lighting!

Today was kind of a weird day. Snow, rain, clouds, sun, a mixture if I can say.
Did a few shots at the end of the day while the swallows were feeding near the river.

Here's my picture for today
Since I'm at my girlfriend's house using her computer, no CS5, just the Apple viewer, I did what I could with the picture.
Taken with the D700,1/100s f 6,3 with the 28-85 4.5-5.6 $50.00 lens at 6400 iso.

Happy Easter or other reason you might have to celebrate.

All nice shots, Marcel, except for that last one in post #94. All the others I like.
