Absolutely gorgeous shots, Marcel! Beautiful HDR treatment. And for those of you who would like to know...........Riviere du Loup means Wolf River. :)

Here are a few more shots from my week out of town.
This was done at night and the color of the lights was so horrible that the B+W was required

Great shots, I like the falls in BW, and the sky in the second one.

Thanks Jen. The cloud in the second shot was moving too fast for the long exposure. And I might have over corrected the color balance.

Here's some of yesterday's shots

Pussy willows in Sherbrooke? I guess I'll have to go North to see Spring. We had thunderstorms overnight and maybe, just maybe, the rain will help Spring along.

Here is today's piano project shots. Of the two, the second one is my favorite. Both were done in very low light. I guess I'll have to take more shots from these settings, since I find myself having to use the shot just for the person's expression where I would prefer a different crop or composition.

Well, you live you learn.

the first shot is nice, but the piano looks like its behind the person, rather then him being "at" the piano...if thats what you were going for, then it works...In the second shot...whatever that brown furry thing is (dog?) needs to go...its distracting as heck and blocks a good portion of the piano.

Jen is right, you do take nice portraits. Can you tell me what type of flash you are using and the type of diffusion if any. I have never been good at getting lighting right on portraits; thus I rarely take portraits. I have been dabbling more since I picked up the D700 and an SB-600, but they still look like crapola.

Most of my shots are done with window light exclusively or available light. In only one instance so far on this project have I had to use flash. With the high ISO possibilities of the D700, I use what's there and crank up the ISOs.

I agree with you for the dog, but this is the best expression for the lady. As I explained earlier in this post, I often just take 4 or 5 shots since I don't want to disturb the customers too much. This project will include many shots and I don't want them to look all alike. This is why some are sitting at the piano, some are just posing in front of the piano. I even have a few where I will have 2 shots, one with the piano only and the other of just the person. I'll see how this goes.

I guess I have to experiment further. I took a second look at both of your portraits and I'm amazed that neither one of them are noisy considering that you cranked up the ISO. Thanks for replying.

Good points Marcel. I think your portraits are great, regardless. The subject always shines. I guess i just wish that dog was at least sitting up facing the camera instead of what looks like jumping down. I understand how you do things and know why it s what it is. I wasn't critiquing as much as i was just thinking out loud. Keep up the great work.

For this setting the dog was just too darn excited. I'm not home tonight, but I can post the other shots I took (maybe smaller pics to save bandwith) to show you the problem I've caused by not taking more shots.
I'm just not taking enough time to do these properly, but, I'd like these to look as casual as possible...
Thanks for your thoughts and kind words.

Nice portraits, Marcel! I agree with Joe about the dog. Try taking a "squeaky toy" with you when there are dogs. You might be able to get their attention just long enough for a good shot (if you even want them in the photo)

Nice work.

Your scenic and macro shots are superb. I especially like the pussy willow. Great job on all of them.

Thanks Helene for your kind words and comments. As for the squeaky toy, there is no way I'm going to carry this in with my piano tools and camera. But, I appreciate the idea. I have to admit it would have made a better shot if the dog would have looked into the camera as well.
Here are the others and only shots I did for this setting:

If I might offer a suggestion...

Take a matchbox or match book with you. Dragging your finger along the striking surface will attract the dogs attention.

It is not the amount of noise that attracts animals. Its the unfamiliarity of the noise that attracts them.

Hope this helps.

Definitely a change of focus with the dog in the picture. However, it's pretty clear that the lady enjoys having the dog there!
