First off for myself I would not get rid of this lens. It's on my camera 95% of the time. Most of my 365 photos since mid February have been taken with this lens. I go back and forth if I'm happy with this lens. I would have to say I love this lens. Maybe I'm just getting greedy on how much I can zoom in with this thing, on a D90 it's 35mm equivalent 450mm zoom so I can't complain on the quality of photos this lens can produce. I think when I bought it I was expecting more. Then again I don't know what I was expecting.
This lens is a beast, it long and heavy. It takes 77mm filters that should give you and idea how wide the front glass is on this thing. I put in a couple of photos of my D90 with a flash bracket and battery grip on to give you an idea how big it really is.
I find this lens loves a lot of light, and rightfully so seeing how the lens very quickly goes to f5.6 - by the time you're at 70mm you're at f5.0, and by 105mm you're at f5.3. This is the only thing I don't like about this lens.
This lens is perfect for people who need a large focal range to shoot a wide variety of subjects and don't want to have to change lens all the time. This is why I wanted this lens. With my 55-200 I found myself wanting more on the short end and a lot more on the long end.
Now when it comes to doing a crop zoom in Photoshop at 450mm your not going to get much more than actual pixels with this one, basically what you see is what you get.
This lens is good for someone who wants to travel light. What I mean by traveling light is just one lens maybe a flash and camera. The trade off to this is the weight of the camera and lens. Is this a walk around lens? That would depend on you. I have not had this lens out all day, I have had it out for extended periods of time and find myself carrying it with the neck strap wrapped around my wrist and holding the camera by the battery grip, and it did not seam to bother me. I have an all day outing planned for late May, after that I can tell you more.
The only regret I have about this lens is it's not fast glass. I should have rented one out before I bought one. If I would have done that I might not have bought one, and maybe held out for fast glass. If I would have done that then I be back in the same boat where I would want more on the short end. I will only own Nikon Glass, that's why I bought a Nikon, and I still love this lens and will make it work for me until I decide if I'm buying faster glass or not down the road. Right now I'm over budget this year on camera upgrades, so I have a whole year to decide what I'm doing.
