Pretzel's Snack-A-Day (365 for 2014)

My time/date thing on my camera goes all haywire sometimes. Not a major problem, more annoying if anything. I never really noticed until if started to appear (along with other data) as I hovered over my newly posted pictures (which for some reason I do more than I need.)

Now to the pictures. Love the bird pics, I've been meaning to get out and take a few my self. Maybe this is the inspiration I need. I really like the silhouette bird in the sun light. It's the colours that work for me...

Day 83 - Silhouettes are FUN!

1st, just messing around with the neighbor's daffodils, testing the effect of a flash in sunlight. There may be some more learning I need to do on this, or perhaps try on a day when there isn't a constant 20 mph wind? I guess it did serve to remove some of the shadows. Also guessing that, due to the flash, that's where the -0.67 exposure adjustment came from?

Then the shot I was really after, caught at just the right moment. I call it "NO, Ralph... your OTHER left!"

It reminded me of waaaaaay back when to the "One Of These Things" song from Sesame Street:

One of these things is not like the others,
one of these things doesn't belong,
can you tell which thing is not like the others
by the time we finish our song?

Day83-1.jpg

Did ya guess which thing is not like the others?
Did ya guess real hard, with all your might?
Well if ya guessed THIS thing is not like the others,
then I guess your guess is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

Day 84 - Date Night

Well, it all started here... Reuben Rolls for an appetizer, and a split order of fish and chips for dinner, YUM! After dinner, and a couple of full to the rim imperial pints of the "black velvet" (and perhaps a sip or two off of the wife's pint of whatever it was), we decided to take a wee walk down to The Coffee Shop for a rest and a boost. Ok, dessert and a coffee for the wife, a rest and a boost for the other member of our party. ;)

Day84-1.jpg

The wife got the chocolate raspberry layer cake and some wildly named coffee, while I had a double dirty chai. This is her cake and my chai.

Day84-2.jpg

Hers came out with a prettier bit o' flourish on top.

Day84-3.jpg

And a little off center attempt to be artsy. All the while I was pointing the camera around, I was chatting with the barista to see who I had to talk to in order to get some of my pics on the walls. I left with a name to contact in the morning!

Day84-4.jpg

Not sure why I shot this pic (2+ pints?), but here it is... we were at the side counter, so it was my view between the grinders and the steamer/cup rack. ;)

Day84-5.jpg

All with the nifty fifty, no flash, but I guess the now always visible EXIF info will tell ya that! (Thanks again @jdeg!) Not bad at all for handheld shots on pint night, and quite respectable for higher ISO shots with the D3100, eh?

Also noticed that the -.67 compensation is still present without the flash being on the camera, so gotta figure out what I've done.

Day 85 - just seeing how close I can get with the kit lens... just shy of a 12" minimal focus distance, then cropped to 100%. This is the Gerber logo on the blade of my small EDC knife.

Day85.jpg

Day 86 - more kit lens fun, this time with a random splash of water droplets on a glass plate from a photo frame. Poor lighting, all on-cam SB700, trying to manually focus with the 18-55 as the auto focus wanted to lock in on the crayons underneath. That's TOUGH, as the manual focus ring isn't really dialed in to allow uber precise control on this. My first major irritation with the "kit" lens. Really want a macro, and should have been doing this on a tripod instead of handheld, but oh well.

Just learning phases again for now, nothing I'd really feel like displaying or even printing, so thanks for putting up with me. The water drops will definitely come back some day, after I figure out how to get more rounded droplets and light the subject a bit better. THEN, I'll get out the tripod. :)

The water drops aren't too bad splattered roughly like that but you get nicer refracted images in the drops if they are nicely rounded. Use an eyedropper to make the drops ;) and yes, you need a tripod and focus on the image in one of the drops. If you place your smarties or whatever in a bowl with a rim, you get a nice edging on the images in the drops too.

Still, I kinda like that look you got with those ragged drops. Gives me an idea :D

Day 87 - Dabbling With Daffodils

Round 2 of shooting outside with the SB700 on camera, stock diffuser. Then, editing to get some additional detail from there.

Day 88 - Post 1000, and a very worthy subject. :)

BUSY day today. In fact, a whirlwind. Did NOT have time to choose a nice background setting or dial in much of anything, just a snap and go before we ran again, but here it is. My son holding up the small medal he earned for a superior piano performance at the District Achievement Auditions. It's not huge, but he's only been at it about 6 months, and both his instructor and the judge today commented on how he seems to have "an ear for how music is supposed to be played". This earns him the right to continue on the the state level. Listening to him practice this morning, knowing just how little time he's been at it so far, I was... pretty much amazed. Well done, my boy. Well done! (and YES, bow ties ARE cool, aren't they?)

Congratulations to your son! Bow ties rock. Even when you swag them crooked... 😜
