Day 71 - Wolf in sheep's clothing?

Chatting about different PS techniques (layers and such) with a few folks today, an idea popped into my head that I wanted to try, so I gave it a shot. I'm not *THRILLED* with the result, but I came out with something barely "workable" and a bit of knowledge gained. ;) I think I wanna go back to my abstracts though, although I guess this could qualify... I just need a night to take my time and do it better.

Now you have to tell us what the idea was and how you tried to do it.

Pretty simple, really. 2 shots, one with an actual hand showing "peace" while the shadow that is cast is showing "WOLF!" on the wall. A little magic lasso, new layer with some edge refinement, a little bit of a smudged border to give it more of a DOF kind of feel, then blended back to the other pic. Kind of a different twist on smiling guy looking at a reflection of frowny guy in the mirror kind of thing. I didn't pull it off well at all, but in this case... knowledge gained might make for a better attempt in the future?

Interesting concept. Trying things like this is always a good thing. Doing it again and again till you get exactly what you envisioned is a great thing. I still have projects that I dredge up every once in a while to work on. Each time is gets a little better and so do I.

I do that with my cooking too. I will cook something and write out the recipe as I go. Then we eat the meal and 1 of three things happens. !. WE take two bites and throw out the recipe and go out to eat. 2.We like it and think it could be a little better so I tweak the recipe while I remember what the tastes were and put it away for next time. 3. It is perfect and I file it in the permanent file and it goes into the regular rotation of meals. WE have our meals planed for the next year with some things every week, some dishes every two weeks and some once a month so it is easy to add something into the mix.

The same method can be applied to your photography. I did a pano today. I only do those maybe once a month. HDR maybe every two weeks. My favorite places to walk and shoot normally every week.

Good attempt. For me what would make this work is a better contrast to the lighting. You want it obvious that one is shadow and one is the actual hand. What would really work would be if you could replace the one shadow with the other. In other words, two photos where you see both the hand configuration and the reflected shadow, connected but with the separation being such that you can overlay the wolf shadow on the peace sign hand. Might require a bit of contorting your arm ... or rotating and otherwise free transforming one layer.

Quick and dirty, something along the lines of this (having more arm and shadow would make it easier - I just painted to give you the feel)...

YES!! That is similar to what was in my head, but it didn't make it through to the finished product. All in all, it was one of those WOW ideas at work, but I over-thought all the processes and manipulation it would take and didn't give the actual shot setup enough consideration. By the time I got home, I was weary and gave the attempt less than my full effort, and that's probably what led to my final disappointment. I didn't rearrange furniture around my blank space on the wall, so the camera was much too close for the nifty fifty, my light source (iPhone LED flash on flashlight mode) was not strong enough, the light source itself was from the left while what I was trying to do with the shadow could only happen with a light source from the right... I could go on, but I won't. Add to that the fact that my attempts at free-form manipulation on the shadow itself were frustrating me, and it was just too much. I gave up and went with what I had, promising myself that I would return to attempt this shot again VERY soon (like, say, this weekend). 3 shots instead of 2, better lighting, better composition, better starting point. Then, having a basic understanding of the tools from this botched 1st attempt, I'm hoping the improvement will be VERY noticeable!

2 things I learned: 1) The edge refinement tool on a cut/copy layer is FANTASTIC for manipulating shadows to get some DOF back! 2) A lesson you would have thought I had already learned: you can't half-ass a WOW idea and get a WOW result... this lesson has now been reinforced.

Ended up so frustrated that I had no motivation to get any other shots for the evening, but then couldn't sleep, so I got back up at about 1 a.m. Out of the blue, I spotted something random that I *HAD* to try and capture, so took a few shots and settled my mind... in the viewfinder, I think I got what I wanted, so we'll see when I get back home and actually import them. Discouraged, but not defeated!

Ding - Ding - Ding!! We have a winner!!!

This has been reinforced with me several times this month when I've tried setting up a shot and just not taken all the time necessary to get things right before I started firing off shots. Great photographs start with great ideas, but they rarely skimp on the execution part. Sometimes you get lucky, but that's something you can't count on.

Day 72 - Moments of opportunity.

About the time I was getting home tonight, my neighbor that lives in the condo next door was coming in too. Honey, I'm home!

Sometimes, you just need a moment before you go in...

Day72-2.jpg

Then here are a couple I shot EARLY this morning in a fit of sleeplessness. Nothing fancy, but rather an attempt to catch the glowing filament without overexposing.

I don't know what Jake thinks of it. But I like the effect.

I had dropped him a note suggesting doing a second texture on the base rather than a single texture across the entire photo.

If you've still got the layers, try a free transform on the bulb texture and rotate the cracks a bit so they run at an angle. Not sure which might work better, but I'm thinking angled right a bit. I think it will enhance the separation of the twists, which get a little lost in the texture. It may or may not help, but give it a shot.

Day 73 - Portrait Day...

...and somehow, to Mom's chagrin, this little fella found some dirt. The specific kind of dirt that has a tendency to stay hidden until an opportune face happens by, then RAWR! It attacks! This was his look when he was asked where the dirt came from... ;)

Day73.jpg

Mom calmed down a bit after I showed her the pic on the camera and said, "Is that him? Is it his personality?" When she said yes, I told her all was well... we just captured a memory!

Day 74 - No Second Chances

Made up my mind what kind of shot I wanted to do, waited for a break in the rain after sunset, went out and took my time... set up the tripod, worked the focus into what I wanted, assessed the settings, and... 1 shot. Pretty much got accomplished what I wanted to get accomplished. Nothing fancy, but then again, I wasn't going for the end all shot of the day. ;)

Now, back to editing yesterday's family photo outing... *yawn*
