Day 89 - Sign of Spring

Yup, every Spring, without fail. I go to the back yard, turn over the dog house (that the dogs never use) and find a grass snake or two. It's a sign that warmer temps have come, although not warm enough to skip hiding in a protected area out of the evening wind. :) Perfect chance to mess with the on-cam SB700 (stock diffuser) in the shade of a large back yard tree.

If I don't move, the big goon won't even notice... What was that light!?

Day89-1.jpg

Darn... Mom warned me there would be days like this.

Day89-2.jpg

Such a tiny little fellow! (excuse the dirty hands, he tried to get away so I made a quick grab and got some dirt with him)

Day89-3.jpg

Now that I have the pics I wanted, he's been turned back to freedom. (Ok, after a quick run inside so I could earn the obligatory shriek from the wife!)

Day 90 - Back Yard Sunset

So took the dogs, and just glancing around saw the sunlight shining through the poor old privacy fence on the backside of our property, thought I'd snap a pic or two and see what I could do with it.

Irritates me, because the ground and fence lines don't match up!!! (My CDO sense is tingling!)

This 1st one, I made the gaps between slats straight.

Day90-1.jpg

A little different edit, and lined up the ground-line instead.

Day90-2.jpg

Darker edit with some fun messing around with highlights/shadows/blacks. I call it "The Landing".

So ... I like the 2nd shot with the ground lined up. I found the centre fence rail being crooked was really annoying in the top shot. BUT....I like the processing of the top shot best. I tend the lean towards "warm" anyway so that would explain why I like that processing :D

Well done on your sons achievement too, he would seem to be a natural talent. I hope he keeps it up :D

Day 90 BONUS - Shots of opportunity

We had a very fast squall line roll through. I spotted a shot, ran in and switched to the 70-300, and took a few handheld shots as it rolled by, all the while trying to stay dry.

This is what originally caught my eye.

Day90-5.jpg

Zoomed in a bit, and messing with "whitening" a bit.

Day90-6.jpg

Then a shot of what came quickly behind, with an attempt to edit in some of the "magic of the moment"...

Day 83 - Silhouettes are FUN!

1st, just messing around with the neighbor's daffodils, testing the effect of a flash in sunlight. There may be some more learning I need to do on this, or perhaps try on a day when there isn't a constant 20 mph wind? I guess it did serve to remove some of the shadows. Also guessing that, due to the flash, that's where the -0.67 exposure adjustment came from?

Then the shot I was really after, caught at just the right moment. I call it "NO, Ralph... your OTHER left!"

It reminded me of waaaaaay back when to the "One Of These Things" song from Sesame Street:

One of these things is not like the others,
one of these things doesn't belong,
can you tell which thing is not like the others
by the time we finish our song?

Did ya guess which thing is not like the others?
Did ya guess real hard, with all your might?
Well if ya guessed THIS thing is not like the others,
then I guess your guess is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

These shots made me truly Laugh Out Loud!! Good capture.

Day 91 - You took it with a WHAT!?

Yes... don't shoot... it was taken with an iPhone 5. Best camera to shoot with is the one you have with you, and wanted to see how it would handle the shot, and what I could do with it. So here ya go...

ISO 50, INSANE shutter speed! LOL

Day91.jpg

For the record, I'd rather shoot with my Nikon. MUCH more quality to work with, and much more control with RAW. ;)

Whew....stay away from the light! I even had to squint to look at my monitor!!

Day 93 - What is this bright yellow orb in the sky, and why is it melting everything???

Yes, this is what the world looks like when you come out to a NON-dreary Spring day after working inside for too long... (it's also what it looks like when you've bumped your camera out of aperture into manual without realizing it)

Figured I'd share the edit from my mistake today and make it the pic of the day. :)

Glad you have seen the light.....of checking the camera before a shot?!

Nice save. Well done!

While I think it looks good the way it is, did you try bumping the exposure down and then bringing the blacks and shadows back up?

Oh yeah, tried lots of things. It was one of those "I'm in such a hurry, but that hydrant looks cool with the blooming trees and urban bit behind it, so grab the cam, lens cap off, snap a shot, lens cap on, cam back in the bag, RUN!!!" moments. Didn't even stop to look at the screen to make sure I had the shot... All very unlike my normal approach. Thought I made the switch to aperture mode to help compensate, since I was in a rush, but apparently knocked it back to manual, and it had all the settings from my DVD selfie from the night before, LOL.

After messing for a bit, decided I liked this look the best out of all the edits, so went with it. Brings some ideas to mind for intentionally overexposing shots in the future, but probably not quite to the extent that I did with this one.

I hear ya. I am huge about just snapping the shot and then moving on. And then BOOM, craptastic shot. I have to walk all the way back and do it again....

Day 94 - Sing it with me... "Here comes the sun..." doo-doo-doo-dooooo!

Just a common sign of spring, the dreaded dandelion, hopefully viewed in a not so common way. They're quite amazing when viewed in the right light (which means, look at it as a flower, not an annoying ugly weed that will take over every square inch of your yard in a few weeks). I used a couple of different lenses too, the nifty fifty and the kit lens, just to see what each one is capable of. The nifty fifty shots were cropped rather heavily, the kit 18-55 not so much, as I was able to get about 6" closer and still get a good focus. The kit, in fact, could almost be a macro lens... almost. I need to put one of those raynox things on it. ;) (slaps self, "D7100 first, stupid! STAY FOCUSED!)

This 1st one, I wanted to mess with one of the "slightly over-exposed" ideas that I had. Catch a dandelion in the sunlight, and allow it to glow like the sun since it is a sign of Spring, after all.

Day94-2.jpg

Then, just testing the close-up detail of the nifty fifty. Got as close as I could and still get a focus, then cropped heavily. This shot, and the shot before, helped me notice details on a dandelion that I've never noticed before, and that's what made me want to get CLOSER with the kit lens, so out I ran again!!

Day94-1.jpg

EXTREME crop for a VERY close look! I still get amazed by the tiny details and the ability to capture it with technology these days.

Day94-3.jpg

Ok, so I pulled the bloom off of the main plant and moved it around the yard a bit. Didn't really get the perfect spot like I hoped, but still got a couple of different looks. :) (barely cropped, just from the in-cam 4x6 to a 4x5(8x10) as that's how close the 18-55 can focus!)

Day94-5.jpg

There are even beautiful details on the underside! Such detail, and never noticed 99.9% of the time. Of course, it's hard to see normally... (uncropped image to show how close the 18-55 can get)

Day94-6.jpg

A little grunge with a double sign of spring... a dandelion bloom and clover.

Day94-7.jpg

And then, just for fun, I did a bit of a darker edit to draw out quite a bit more of the detail. (BARELY cropped as well)

Day94-4.jpg

All in all, common photographs of a common yard nuisance, but quite a bit of fun for me. :) Thanks for putting up with me! LOL
