Thanks Misti that is a very appreciated compliment. Shooting people is fascinating, it forces you to really look at them, quickly get a sense of who they are and then find that moment where they expose who they are through their expression and pray you have it in focus ;).

There was a spot I went to the other day and I was leaning against a wall and shooting people as they walked towards me just past a crosswalk. They were so close and right in my lens as they walked by and as I was shooting them that they could touch me as they walked by. No one seemed upset, a couple people stopped and talked to me. A couple wanted to see the pics of them, I felt like I was really in the environment and within the scene and part of the scene. Very different than shooting at 300mm and giving more space between me and the people I shoot.

Super Mod
Rick, I really like the crispness of your shots. Great shooting skill it takes to get these.

Which focusing mode are you using with the 5100?

Bonus post. These were all shot with a P&S that was slim enough to fit in my pocket.

Click on the image below for a mini slide show of Street Photos I shot in India a while back.

Hi Rick,

I like your Street Portraits, do you use a longer FL, (60-100 or more)?

A long shoot can be very effective with the OOF background..

I like the 24mm (35mm Film), it affords a fast grab shoot style with everything set for Max DOF and "A" mode.

The RAW, look you like in my Street Photography Topic is from 35mm B&W Film scanned at 5500dpi to TIFF/Re-sized to JPGs

I use either my 70-300mm or my 18-200mm for these shots. I shot in S mode with the shutter speed at 1/250 or higher to get focus as sharp as possible. The sensor in the D5100 seems to really work best with higher shutter speeds for me.

Amazing and so clear as always. The second from the bottom in the last set that guy looks extremely angry. All I could think was Yikes.! I think its the gloss of his eyes for me that makes it really jump out there.

I truly do love looking at these, you have been able to capture so much expression and emotion in their eyes. Do you had out cards for this page so people can see that these are more than just a guy standing on a corner with a camera? I bet they would enjoy them just as much as we do.

Thanks Misti!

I have been trying to design a business card I can print that would have the Nikonites logo, my basic contact info and links to nikonites and my photobucket public page.

Rick,

These are all amazing but I do have to ask, on the shots 4/29/12 the guy second down from the top with the star on his shirt ( below the star reflection sunglasses) he looks as if there is strong emotion in his eyes and there is a shine on his cheeks just off the sides of his nose, that makes me think he may have been a tad sad even crying. If it was hot I guess its most likely sweat or something but his eyes are telling different.( I sometimes put to much into it sorry it just blows me away the detail you can see if you look for it)

He does look sad. He was watching some men who are in bands and trying to get noticed and record their own music CDs and bring out to Hollywood Blvd. As people walk by they take the CD stick it in your hand and try to get you to buy it. they typically have CD players and headphones so people can listen to the music. They offer to sign the CD's to make them more personal. They are a bit aggressive in their approach.

I'm not sure what the gentleman in the image was thinking about as he watched but he definitely got serious and sad looking.

When I find someone who interests me for a picture I focus on them with the continuous tracking focus and I keep them in the viewfinder and just watch as they hang out or walk or interact or.... I may shoot 7 or 8 images of them as I watch just waiting till I feel as though I got just the right mood or expression. And then look for the next person who catches my interest. I am very exposed and right out there not hiding or far away. I am just part of the scene just like the guys with the CD's.

I'm afraid that if I did that I'd get the camera ripped out of my hand and have it thrown on the ground. I wanted to find something round that goes around in Wal Mart toy section but I didn't dare take the camera in there......just sayin'.....:p
