nothing special about this engine other than its number (my birth year)

Caught two shots yesterday of eastern railroad heavyweights CSX and NS. CSX appeared at Laurens, SC and NS at Spartanburg, SC. No matter where I stood in Laurens, I was surrounded by signposts and poles.

That's a nice find nikonpup, an SD-40-2 built exactly 40 years ago in 1979. These were once common stalwarts of North American railroading, but their numbers are thinning.

Ohio seems to be a stronghold for those SD-40-2 locomotives. I wonder how long they will survive on the CSX & NS. Smaller lines seem to really rely on them.

Why? When i go to take a picture, the R.R. swat team rolls out. Taggers can spent all day painting.

I've never been able to figure that out either. Some years ago I was standing adjacent to a yard watching winos and derelicts stumble across the many tracks unmolested. You can guess the rest of the story. Soon thereafter, a railroad cop spies Sandpatch, standing in a safe spot with a Nikon and scanner, and asks me to leave. At least he was nice about it. Maybe he was in the mood for conversation with someone sober.

I'm feeling bad, it's been a while since I posed any train pictures here. This is from a while ago, but I don't think I've shared it. Westbound NS auto-rack train coming off the Sandusky OH district onto the Fostoria district.

Coincidental with nikonpup's sighting of an SD-40-2 was my sighting of one today as seen here. NS is rebuilding these I think; such a beautiful shine.

I love old signals, so was happy to capture one with this local. The "fishtail" plate on the signal mast identifies it as a "Distant" signal and you can see its aspect show in the "Home" signal behind the train on the left.

…. and one more. This of NS 192 leaving Columbia, SC headed north. With NS's Top21 operational changes, 192 has become an enormously long train. I'm surprised that it runs without helpers.

Great captures Sandpatch, you had a very productive day track side. :encouragement:

That SD40-2 shines like a new penny. Those may stay around due to some industrial tracks & branch lines not being able to take the weight of the larger locomotives.

Thank you. The old signal shot was made possible by a locomotive failure which caused the train to stall on the grade. It created a mess for NS. Everything had to be backed downgrade across the river and returned to the yard. The SD-40-2 was brought out to either assist or replace the original unit.

Yesterday's summer heat and humidity was almost too much. I finally poured my bottle of drinking water over my head and shirt. The cooling felt great!

Took the long route to the grocery store today so that I could check things on NS. A red signal indicated a northbound was due, so I set up for a picture. That's an SD-60 rebuild leading.

Friday was a beautiful day here. High of 75 with a nice breeze blowing. That inspired me to head north & see what I could see. Lucky for me I found some trains.

This westbound one is in the middle of a crew change at North Baltimore OH.

The same train leaving the Garret OH sub at Deshler OH.

Onto the southbound Toledo sub.

This local grain train is waiting for a clear signal. The crew is standing outside to do a roll by inspection of the passing train.

These picture are from Carey OH at the huge National Stone quarry. It appears the quarry is going to get even larger. They are laying maybe another mile of tracks to the north of the present quarry.

You had a great day trackside -- a really nice collection of shots. Love the scene here with the train crossing over under the cantilever signal bridge with the B&O CPLs. You should get a close up the signal bridge and signals before they're gone. Again, just great work on all. :encouragement:
