While this is not an insect, I believe that others have posted arachnid shots on this thread.... So here goes, although I'd like to go back an shoot this shot with a strobe lighting this one from the bottom of the frame. What we call a Crab Spider down here.

Hey Ironwood, did you take it from other angles as well?

This is so cool… I want more!
I took some more shots, but all the others were no good due to slow shutter speed and wind blowing the web around.
For this shot I used the cameras flash. It worked better than I expected.
I had the lens extended right out for close focusing, and I expected the front of the lens to cast a shadow.

thats one mean looking spider, four legs???
Hi Roy, each "leg" is actually two if you look closely.

Scary looking!! How big is it?

Hi Marilynne, from fang to tip of tail is about 10mm ( 3/8" ).
It doesnt look quite as scary in real life as you cant see all the detail.

I am corrected by one of my friends that this is not a crab spider, but a Spiny Orb Weaver. I'm not sure how far north they venture, but they are considered resident to the US southfrom California to Florida plus Central America and in some Caribbean Islands.

We have a similar one here, ours is yellow and black.
I will see if I can get a photo of one this afternoon , I'll post it here if I do.

I've posted a few of these on my 365(ish) thread as well, and actually found out that they have quite a FEW names! :)

star spider, spiny-backed orbweaver, spiny orbweaverhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiny_orb-weaver, crab spider, crab-like orbweaver spider, crab-like spiny orbweaver spider, jewel spider, spiny-bellied orbweaver, jewel box spider or smiley face spider

Whatever you call 'em, they're durn cool looking beasties!

Here are some photos of an Australian version as promised.

It was still very windy this afternoon, it was blowing back and forth and I had to try and anticipate when it was in focus and click the shutter at the right time.
These were the best 3 out of about 20.
