Day #16

Ok! Anti Inflammatory pills seem to have helped a bit with the pain. I decided to start this back up. Can't win the prize but I only lose if I quit.

So, my first successful moon shot, or what I think was successful. I was going to do, as I have read, a tight crop around the edge of the moon with a selection tool and cut it and paste onto a black background to give it a sharp perimeter. I didn't want to do that as there is detail in the edges. I can see the peaks and valleys of craters. Detail I did not want to destroy.

Absolutely Mike!!! The prize is really not as important as the learning and the fellowship with all the great folks... shoot all you can and share what you choose... You will gain so much more than the prize my friend!

He was farther away than I would have liked but the pair never got any closer to me. Took it anyway. Had to crop it a lot so it has to stay small. I don't see these often so I am happy I had a chance to snap one. I had no idea they were around today but I was alerted by their unusual call/songs.

I stopped by a little BB-Q shack that has the best BBQ in town. I go there usually once per week. Today, I saw an interesting light on this old (I am guessing it is old) bench that is so comfortable to sit on.

Chased a pair of Belted Kingfishers around for a couple hours and not one shot did I get of them. Buggers!

I did get a bunch of Great Egret shots so they will fill in for my shot for today.

Great shots bud! You've a great eye my friend! :D

I may have got the shot at the right time but I got to say that it is due looking at others photos, and taking their advice, that got this shot.

I knew the light was going to be right so I waited for the light to get right. I was able to get very close to the bird and I had a nice breeze that blew his tail feathers out for some added detail. The only luck I had was that you can see the light striations (ripples) of the pond surface reflected onto the front of his body. I loved this after I saw it.

Tonights installment is not an exercise in striving for technical excellence in photography. This time I am simply posting a technical series on my new flash mount brackets I made for my light stands. Taking a cue from another member, WJYPhoto I believe, I used 3/4" flat aluminum strips to make brackets to strap the strobes down flat instead of standing up straight on their flash foot. I didn't want to chance breaking the foot and this also places the flash more to the center of the Brolly Box umbrella.

Aluminum strips mounted to the umbrella/flash holder.

Flash units strapped to brackets (here I used black electrical tape until I get my velcro belt straps) and Yongnou RF-603 radio poppers mounted to flash units.

Wow! Why didn't some of you tell me I was that good looking!!

Anyway, here is my very first off camera flash portrait using light modification (brolly box). It's me!!

I took a few shots to get the light and shadows right. I think I shot six images and this was the best. I had more issues getting auto focus to focus correctly than I had with lighting this thing.
