D600 shutter replacement news

I suspect that there is a veritable tidal wave of D600 bodies hitting repair centers, so all reasonable estimates are thrown out the window. They may be willing to fix them, but they're not hiring temporary help to get through the pile. Think of it like the increase UPS sees after Thanksgiving, but without the extra crews to handle it. I'm guessing repair times run 3-4X normal for anyone who didn't get in right away. And hopefully they have enough replacement shutters - my D600 got processed in 2 days both times it went in, and then I waited 3 weeks each time for parts.

yieks. which center did you send them off to?

New York. This was early on while Nikon was likely scrambling to even identify the cause of the issue, and then, once they did, they may have been sending back batches to the manufacturer in hopes of getting new stuff? I have no idea precisely why they didn't have them, but I was on parts delays both times. I'm hoping that they had boxes of shutters on both coasts before they made the announcement, but who knows?

guess we'll find out in couple of days if im lucky. i would certainly hope so since a slew of shipments was to be expected with the announcement.

Checked my sensor again a couple days ago and do have a few spots at f18. I'm just going to continue to wet clean it and see how it stands. If I decide to send mine in, I probably won't do so until the end of summer. No way am I going to be without a body for who knows how long, especially at a time when I need it the most.

Or on the contrary, do it now when they're prepared for a high volume of returns and then TEST their repair through the spring and the service warranty you'll get.

Else, as of right now, mine says SHOP, so did this mean they're working it or could that "waiting for parts" pop up next?

Here is my story.

I do not have excessive sensor dust/oil issue with my D600 (over 7000 shots). Of that 7000 shots about 5000 was to check the sensor (too paranoid for these so called sensor oils/dust problems). My D600 only had about a total of 20 spots over 7000 clicks. I wet cleaned the sensor twice.

Decided to use this advisory to get a clean sensor and new shutter mechanism.

Dropped off my camera February 26 at UPS Store. Delivered to Nikon Melville on February 28. Nikon Services log March 3. in "shop" status from March 4 to March 6, in "billing" status from March 6 to March 10, shipped out March 10. UPS delivered March 12. Therefore, it is a total of 14 days turn-around including two weekends.

According to the repair invoice:
RPL shutter mechanism
CKD AF system
CLN image sensor
CKD AE operation
CKD Aperature operation
CDK Flash operation
General check & clean

I did test shot at f20 and there is an additional 2 spots after 70 shots but were not at the left upper corner. The shutter count indicated the the new shutter had 1064 shots when I received mine - must test shots by NIkon after shutter replacement.

By the way, did they specify what the repair warranty time was? 60 days, 90 days?

Mine is still under original 1 year warranty.

According to the back of their service order, under condition of service the photo equipment service has 180-day service limited warranty.

I view this Nikon Service Advisory as a product RECALL. If the spots return, the warranty should be extended for a longer period of time.

unfortunately its not a recall. as far as i understand, they are replacing shutter only once and ONLY on those camera who didn't have it replaced before under warranty regardless if the spots returned or not!

i view this as a cheap little trick :)

Trick they will be legally responsible for after the service, soooo...... extended 180 day warranty on a clean sensor and shutter? Why not.

I did receive an Estimate/ Acknowledgment letter from Nikon, Los Angeles today, they did receive my D600 and the serial number is correct. They is no estimate on Nikon's WEB page as to when the repair will be complete.

[h=1]Billing[/h]D600
Order Number: 6345379
Serial Number: 3015928
UPS Tracking Number:
Problem: SENSOR DUST No Charge/Good Will Repair
Total cost of repair: $0.00*

They are probably swamped, as they have had the camera for (9) full days as of 3/15/2014. I hope this service does fix the problem.

I am up in Calgary AB Canada and sent my D600 to Vancouver repair Center march 1st.
-received on the third and sent a estimate of $0.

The online status site is down and after waiting a little over a week I called them on the 12th. They said they had to wait for parts from Japan and would take 2-3 weeks to get them. Then add on top of that repair time and shipping back, I am in for a long wait!

The kicker I asked when the parts where ordered and it wasn't done until the 11th! 8 days to finally order parts is ridiculous I think.

Worst part is in that time we had a baby girl, and I have 5+k sunk into nikon gear I can't use lol. Go iPhone snapshots...

One replacement is the deal for all cameras, before and after the recall. After that you have the warranty period on the repair, which is 90 days, not 180. That said, each time I had issues with the shutter they showed up immediately, and Nikon gave me no issue with the second repair as I contacted them within 15 days of getting mine back from them. I had no issues with the second, and have no complaints about their not being willing to accept mine again had I wanted to send mine in, which I don't - it works as expected. 3 months is more than enough to give your camera a thorough work out.

So status of mine is finally Billing, which from what I've gathered is basically shipping. With hopes up, I suppose the turnaround time is roughly 14ish days if all goes well.

I received notice from UPS, that my D600 will be delivered on Wednesday, March 19th. That will be a full 21 days from shipping to the return of the Camera. If any info is received concerning all that was done, I will post that information on this Thread.

I'll assume that they'll update the service page once it ships/print a packaging slip with all that info. Eagerly awaiting a ship notice...
