    Bump n Zoom

Tried a new (to me) technique tonight as I was snapping some pics of the dinky tree in our family room. So, after a few zoom shots with the D7000 and 70-200, I started shaking the lens or tapping on the tripod, while zooming 70-200. I got some interesting results, such as the shot below...

    D600 nose dive

Ouch! I had my first camera disaster ever last night. I was at my wife's bar and had a bunch of my high school buddies (St. Mary's, Class of '68) in for our Christmas Party. Naturally, I have to take photos. After a few were taken, I put my rig in our small office, on 2 cases of beer. I...

    Lacking motivation

That's right. The Holidays (pick your poison) are coming up, so there's plenty of photo ops ahead. And, in North America, we have winter coming in, which means photos of my dogs romping in the snow.

    fireworks

manual focus and if you can get there early and set focus in advance on the area you will be capturing. if you're just shooting the fireworks (no foreground), focus on the first burst and go from there. you can always focus on infinity if you don't want to do the other two methods. Good...

    fireworks

I agree with the 28 if the fireworks are close to you (100-200 yards). I'd say take both lenses and take some shots while it's light out to check the field of view and get your focus set. If you get there early, you can be set up and ready to roll. Everything in manual except WB (adjust...

Thai girl friend correct or not.

    OK. Here's one of my grandsons taken after Thanksgiving dinner. D600 w/70-200 2.8, ISO 100, f/7.1, 1/160 sec, 3 SB-800s triggered with SU-800. Tweaks in LR4 and CS6.

    DIY Flash Bracket for Umbrella

How do you trigger your flashes? If using IR, you have no way to line up the flashes with the transmitter (pop up flash or SU-800). I use the very sturdy Manfrotto umbrella brackets with Giotto ballheads. The ballhead allows me to rotate the flash for IR triggering. Not an issue if I use RF.

    Glass rose

Here's a shot of a real rose, taken against a black background, with off-camera lighting and a bit of tweaking in LR4 and CS6. Notice how nothing detracts from the rose and all of the rose in in the photo.
