While we're on the subject of Tamron (and I'll throw in Sigma here too), I'm a fan. When I switched from Pentax I had my heart set on the D800. What that meant tho was my budget for lenses was limited. I did a TONNE of research into the focal range I primarily shoot at and also to 'fill out' my collection too. The nutshell version is that i ended up with the Tamron 24-70 VC, the Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS and (for shits and giggles) the Sigma 150-500.
I've since added a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D and a Sigma 12-24.
Basically, if you choose wisely and put in the research; you can get 99.9% the lens for half the cost.
