Did my D5100 run out of film??

Only advice I can offer is , dont try and learn it all at once.

Leave it on mostly the default settings, set it on aperture priority and just shoot some photos.

You will soon see what you need to change after a few days, and as you get familiar with the camera, things will seem a lot easier.

Just went through the digitutor. Wow, that's a lot of stuff. Why did they have to make it so complicated?

So what's the goss on your D5100 Marilynne? Having just read through the thread an intrigued to hear the outcome!

Congrats on the D7100! I just upgraded myself (from a D90). :)

we have confidence in you Marilynne, expert in no time at all

Thanks Roy. Just been out playing with it. Don't know how to describe it, but it's real smooth. The 18-200mm lens works really nice. Waiting for the camera to adjust from outdoors to A/C before I remove it from the bag. Pictures coming soon to a thread near you.

Tried looking up goss. Don't know what that means, based on the sentence maybe status or update?

Anyway, it's back at the shop with the lens this time. Have to wait until next week for update.

Thanks for the congrats. How do you like your D7100? Big change, so many buttons. Thought my head was going to explode going through digitutor or whatever that's called.

have fun with the new camera. Which lense did you get with the camera? Keep chris around, sound like you have a winner there. Lol

Yep - Gossip! :) Must be an annoying wait...

Yes I can image it's a bit of a steep learning curve from the 5200. I progressed from a D90 so not quite so radical (I've previously had the original D70, and a D80, before the D90). I am really enjoying using it, it's definitely got some user friendly improvements over the D90 (and the D90 was/is a very very very good prosumer/enthusiast camera - well ahead of its time when it came out).

I put a couple of sample shots in my welcome thread. http://nikonites.com/showthread.php?t=14368

Overall very happy with D7100, all good initially... :D

Thanks Ron! It came with the AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm 3.5-5.6GB. Works great so far!

This is a great general purpose lens and excellent walk around option. It's been my primary lens for several years (I bought the Mk.1 model when they first came out) and its only just being supplanted now as I've now got a Nikkor 17-55mm as my main walk around lens and may replace my 18-200 with a 70-300 or 70-200 in coming months for zoom work... Even then I may still keep the 18-200 for travel and such when I just want one lens to cover wide range of focal lengths.

Note the 18-200's only weakness (and not a critical one) is the extreme ends, i.e. at 18mm & 200mm. Shooting around 70mm to 105mm is considered the sweet spot on this lens by the pros IIRC. Check out Thomas Hogan's & Ken Rockwell's websites for more on that... :)

I forgot to mention it's VR II. It also has some extra flip switches.

One thing I'm not sure about on the D7100 is no door on the monitor. I know, one less thing to break, but I liked the option on the D5100 to keep it open or closed.

I'll see how well it works next time we're at the wetlands.

Yep - I think everyone it's VR II (being new and the VR II version's been out about 3-4 years) :) plus got the zoom lock to prevent it extending via gravity when held face down (that'll be the extra switch you refer to)... :)

Shouldn't be a problem! I've never had a DSLR camera that wasn't like this! :) But think about getting yourself one of these: Giottos Aegis M-C Schott LCD Screen Protector for Nikon D600 / D800 / D800E / D7100. I've got one on back order with Berger Brothers to be mailed to me here in NZ once stock is available again (Giottos are OOS and new stock expected to be available globally mid-July).

:)

Glad you mentioned the zoom lock. There's nothing about it in the NIKKOR manual. It shows it and the reference page is ( ). I'll have to do some research on that. The other switch is NORMAL/ACTIVE. That's explained in the manual.

Yep - on my Mark 1 (i.e. VR I) version of the 18-200mm if I run around with my camera in my hand facing down, the lens may slowly creep out (i.e. extend) depending how much I 'shake it around' - obviously as the lens gets older and more worn it apparently gets more common... In the Mark 2 (your VR II) version they added a manual lock, so when you are not using the camera you can wind the lens up to 18mm and then flick the switch to lock it so it can't extend (just remember to unlock again when you go to use it)...

The Normal/Active is what type of VR you want (i.e. vertical, of full vertical & horizontal) - remember if you pan with your shots (following moving object) you don't want the horizontal VR on (Active IIRC).

You will have 2 other switches, one being VR on or off; and the other the usual M/A (Auto with Manual Override) or M (Manual) Focus options. Note also if if you are shooting fast (i.e. low aperture like f/1.4 up to f/4 or so with fast shutter) you don't really need VR, especially if you have a steady hand (the 18-200mm will just sneak into this when wide open with it's lowest aperture). Likewise if using a tripod, etc, turn the VR off...

So anyway that's 4 switches total - people like me only have 3! :D

Hopefully some of that is helpful...

Thanks John. The manual covered everything but the lock and I was able to grasp what the other switches do. It's all the buttons on the camera body that make my head want to explode. I'll figure it out some day.

My D5100 is still at the repair place. Spoke with them yesterday. It's not the lens. They hadn't checked the body yet.

I assume its a Nikon authorized (with warranty and all).. Maybe time to tell them time to fix it or replace it!! (Yes, I have not much patience sometimes!:)
