Hello From Kiwi Land!

Hello from New Zealand,

Just signed up - been a Nikon user & fan for about 12-14 years... Started with a couple of Coolpix's (e.g. 5400), then graduated to the D70 when it came out (loved that camera), been through a D80 (briefly), before upgrading to my current D90. Looking to probably upgrade to the D7100 shortly...

...did a bit of SLR work with film years ago (had an Olympus OM10 and a couple of Sigma Zoom Lenses in the mid-'80's but gradually had less time for photography by the early 90's and they got less & less use).

:D

Thank you all for the welcome...

Love to see some pictures from the underside of the world.

Here's a bit of mucking around with my new D7100 and a (almost) new 17-55 lens I picked up a week ago:

Norfolk_Pine_Vivid05-710070.jpg

D7100 | Nikkor AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED (No Filter) | ISO 100 | f/2.8 @ 55mm | 1/1000

This is a crop of about 25% of the original image (and then re-sampled down to 1200 x 800)... :)

Here's a couple taken at a local beach on a cold grey Sunday morning, hand held, and using the default settings "Vivid" Picture Control... ;)

Very nice,John It's hard to beat the Tokina 11-16mm.Love mine.:)
Thanks Joe - and yeah, loving the Tokina 11-16, haven't really used it's full potential yet - this is a band new lens I also picked up recently (few weeks ago), then I picked up the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G second hand the same time as I purchased my new D7100 to upgrade my D90. So I've added 2 really good wide angle/super-wide lenses to my kit plus the body upgrade at once - so will take a wee while to get familiar with them and start making full use of their abilities...
Thanks.
Welcome to the forum
Thanks Don.

70-200mm, 80-200mm, & 70-300mm [Re: Hello From Kiwi Land!]

Welcome and very nice shots.
Thanks Kevin. I see you have the Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR III and Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED - how would you compare them. How do you find the 70-200mm f/4G especially, have you been able to compare it to a 70-200mm f/2.8G?I am currently looking into these right now (and the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G & Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G, the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D, and the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G) - I'm not in a rush to buy one today but just looking to understand the pro's & con's of each as I see whether my Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G is enough for me for zoom range...
Welcome, very nice pictures
Thanks WUD. I see you have a AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II - what are your overall thoughts on it - I assume this is effectively your everyday lens you use for most of your shooting (as opposed to your 35mm Prime listed in your profile)?

I am very happy with it, but not my everyday lens, its pretty big. I use it for dog action and family portraits, so if that is what I am going to do, I get that lens with me.

35mm I havent used for a while, but it is very sharp and fast (faster than 70-200 and 50mm). At the moment I really dont have an everyday lens, it depends on what I am going to do/want to try out.

I got pictures in my gallery with the 70-200mm, if you wanna see how it operates.

Right. One of the factors I'm considering is weight versus performance - if I eventually get a 70-200 or 70-300 I will be wanting to be able to carry it (along with a tripod) with me on day treks & bush walks and such like - so it's also about the trade off of how much sharpness & speed you gain with the more pro oriented 70-200 or 80-200 (f/2.8 or f/4) zooms versus the lighter weight of the pro-sumer 70-300 designs (either the Nikon or Tokina, I know many people consider the Sigma 70-300 a bit inferior to the first two so not considering that in my musings - the Tokina 70-300 looks to be a very cost effective solution, while the Nikon 70-300 is the lightest of all 5 lenses I've mentioned).

Cool - will do.:)

Re: Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G [Re: Hello From Kiwi Land!]

It's excellent! I have a thread in the telephoto lens section discussing it.
Thanks Rick. I've been looking at it as a good compromise between a 70-200 f/2.4 (it's only about 60% the price & the weight of the f/2.4) but possibly sharper and faster than the 70-300's (and not too much heavier, although still double the cost or more)... This http://nikonites.com/telephoto/12483-nikon-70-200-f4-thread.html I presume? :D
