Did my D5100 run out of film??

I'm suppose to pick up my D5100 tomorrow. It was the mirror again. I was told I must have knocked the mirror when changing the lens. I told the guy I never change the lens. After a moment of silence, I was then told he didn't know how it happened or what I should do to prevent it in the future.

This is not good. Have you looked hard at your spousal unit?

Uh......hit the mirror while changing lens. Hmmm.....I might have told him I could prevent it in the future by having a better service department work on the camera the next time.

I really hate when a company uses a knee jerk reaction to blame the customer......

I guess they hire comedians at this place! You should tell him that if you have to bring the camera back for the same reason, you will hit HIM with a lens!

Well, my D5100 didn't come home today. The same thing was happening, only a partial picture if the lens was in manual. Nothing happened when the lens was in A except focus, so it went back with the lens this time.

When Chris saw how upset I was, he suggested we go buy a backup camera. We called a friend and he said the reviews for the Nikon J3 were really good. We pedaled home to get the Jeep and went to Costco. They're on sale for $699. When Chris saw it, he said "that's not a camera". He then pointed to another camera and said "now that's a camera". So I am now the proud owner of a D7100. I still can't believe it. Wasn't planning on getting another camera, but I have one now. The battery is in the charger as we speak. We'll see how things go tomorrow. More learning for me.

Oh, the camera case that came with the camera doesn't fit in my new extra large bike basket, so I guess I'll have to start using the big metal one that goes on the back of my bike.

You will love the camera once you get used to it!! (that will NOT take you long as much as you shoot!)

It is ridiculus that they could not fix it twice!! Don't they even test it??? Hopefylly they will get it this time... maybe they shoul dsend it to Nikon! :)

Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

That's why they requested the lens this time. They think maybe something is wrong with the lens.

I broke my D3100 so I could get the D5100. Good job there Marilynne. LOL

Congrats on the D7100. That is the camera that I am looking at next way in the future.

Way to go Chris!

Sorry to hear about the 5100 still being down. But that new 7100 should make up for that lost time!

Thanks Roy and Deezy!

Don, battery was charging last night. First I had to figure out how to get it off AUTO. I discovered there's a little button you have to push before you can move the wheel. Now I'm in the process of setting my menus.

I have tiny hands/fingers and I'm having trouble pushing the buttons. Don't know how any one with large hands/fingers can do it.

Thanks Brad. I'm having problems with the setup. Too many buttons!! I think I'll leave it as is and see what I get.

Marilynne... I had the same feeling... I was very intimidated!! :) 2 days of shooting and I was acclimated 95%.. (there were a couple things I could not remember and had to go back to the book..

I have since found that it is faster and easier to do most basic things than on the D5100. When I grab teh D5100, it takes me a second to remember stuff on it! :)

Only advice I can offer is , dont try and learn it all at once.

Leave it on mostly the default settings, set it on aperture priority and just shoot some photos.

You will soon see what you need to change after a few days, and as you get familiar with the camera, things will seem a lot easier.

Good advice its all too easy to suffer from information overload and that spoils the fun.
