Helene, the color photo was originally run through HDR Efex 2 and that made the whole photo pop. As I was mentioning in your "backyard" photo, I used control points to actually back out some of the structure effect to the sky and to bring out some more color. Once I threw the green filter on (with a slight nudge towards the yellow) blue went to stormy very quickly.

Followed your recommendations, Jake, and started to play with HDR efex . . . Love it! Could use some help so I started another thread . . . don't want to clutter up your thread here. You are absolutely correct about the control points . . . makes all the difference in the world!

Decided to forgo an early morning nine holes yesterday and instead grabbed the camera and told the Mrs., "I'm going out to make some pictures. Be back in a couple hours." So glad I did as the first real cool morning of September made for some great areas of fog. It was quiet on the roads so I drove slow and reminded myself, "Be willing to stop, back up or turn around if you see something", and I did.

Came home with over 400 snaps from 4 different places, most from Mountain Lake where the fog had just socked the valley in, so I sat there for an hour as it lifted. Need some time to cull through the best of those, so until then, here are a couple from a mile up the road from me.

There's this yard in Mountain Lake that's, well, unlike any other. I've never seen anyone in the yard, but I get this feeling that were I to meet them we would get along just fine.

(I don't get here very often, but lets just say she's never been dressed the same way twice)

Really nice shots Jake. You got there at the right time as the fog really makes the mood even more intriguing.

Thanks, Marcel. Truth is, it was lifting in the yards around the lake rather quickly and I needed to work a little in post to keep the look I saw when I first got there.

Not 20 yards from there the winds from Sandy tore a hole up the side of the hill as if the hand of God just pushed the trees down himself. It's what made the views in the other photos of the valley possible. So even in beauty there is death.

(I'm strangely poetic this afternoon - LOL)

Here are a couple other views that Sandy made possible...

All of these that you posted today are spectacular! And these last two just take my breath away!

The bottom photo in the last post closely reflects the way the lake looked on Sunday morning. But as I was playing in Lightroom I backed off the Clarity slider (about -45) and got this nice, soft fog effect, that I think might work better for the photo. So, stuck between reflecting what I saw and a mood I decided to post both, if only to show what you can do in post.

Every once in a while when this guy would cast his line you would be able to see a ring of light in the lake where the water was coming off his line in a circle around his boat. Try as I might, this was the best capture I got of it.

And for the absolutely curious, here some video I shot with my D600 standing on the pier at Mountain Lake. No time lapse, the fog was rolling off the water that quickly.

(and people say New Jersey is ugly!! LOL)

Finally, at the northern most corner of the lake, along the road that runs around it, is a small shack that has a pipe coming out of it that pours fresh, mountain spring water for anyone who may need a drink. Given the number of runners that circle the lake daily, and that it sits at a trail head, it gets a fair amount of business.

Lovely images. I love that cabin in #450 with the fog rolling in and I'd love to go for a walk in #442. Looks like you had an excellent morning

I picked up this thread starting with post #452. Those 2 images alone made my jaw drop to the floor. Amazing!!! Then I kept scrolling down the page to see more incredible images and an awesome video! You've mentioned having a brother (or brother-in-law) who is a photographer, but I've got to ask...where did you learn photography? From him or on your own? You are a fantastic photographer in your own right! ;)
