Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC Test

This has been my most debated lens purchase ever. Looking back, I started this thread over a year ago and have battled in my head ever since.

Glad you did this. I bought this Tamron yesterday, and this thread really helped. $600 less than the Nikon, image stabilization, plus a $100 rebate that will more than cover my local sales tax. Pics and tests coming soon in a new thread.

My older Nikon 28-70 2.8 auto-focus suddenly got noisy and would not lock focus properly, constantly going in-out-in-out-in-out of focus. It happened while I was four blocks from our best Raleigh camera store, so I took that as an omen.

Would it be fair to compare this against the Nikon 24-70?
Considering that you'll get 1 kilo of Tamron against 1/2 kilo of Nikon? :p

Am looking at picking a lens for studio shoots.. portraits, fashion & product mostly.
Really want the Nikon, but considering this as it costs half :D
Would be moving to Fx as well... sooner or later

need help here.
Which lens would you choose.
USED Nikon 24-70mm at 2/3 of its price or Tamron 24-70mm VC
and also, is it true that repairing nikon 24-70mm lens would be expensive?

What is the value of a warranty to you?

@ Eduard - No warranty left.
But does the Tamron have a warranty? That was Ed's point me think...
I can vouch for the expensive Nikon repair part. I've had a 17-55 2.8 repaired and it cost 460.00. These models where the inside elements move in and then out while you zoom sometimes have more problems than zooms which only move in one direction. I think it's a mechanical problem.

hahaa ... my bad ... :black_eyed:
as for tamron, its brand new.
question corrected ... 'Is it worth buying USED nikon 24-70mm or NEW tamron 24-70mm VC'
No warranty for nikon ... thanks

Tamron USA and Canada claim a six year warranty.

I'd go with the new Tamron since it comes with a warranty. I had a Nikon lens repair that cost $200 (not including shipping both ways--final cost with shipping was $250 because the lens was out of warranty). Just the other day I thought someone posted a quote for a new AF motor in a lens was around $400-$600. Reviews are quite positive for the new Tamron with vibration reduction. That Nikon lens doesn't have VR.

thats quite hefty sum to pay repaired lens.
Can't imagine the price to repair 24-70mm 2.8 ... :numbness:

Very positive reviews I must say. Even DxO made a test on it ( result )
What worries me is, will tamron 'hunts' in a poor lite places ... NOT DARK PLACES

@ hark ... awesome pictures from flickr.
not related question - Are you using 18.0-35.0 mm f/3.5-4.5G ED, if yes, how is the performance like ... :)

I love my Nikon 18-35mm. Although I haven't used it in low light conditions, the AF is very fast and quiet.

The past couple of years Nikon put some of their lenses on sale--I think it's been in February. And the good news it wasn't a body/lens combo sale...just some of the lenses. Hopefully they will bring it back in 2015 and offer some of their popular lenses! :)

I doubt either lens will hunt much more than the other. They gather the same amount of light and both have excellent focus motors. I'd be more concerned with the body's ability to focus in low light.

have been in the market for a fast zoom for my D7100. could not justify the price tag of the home brand, sigma is no option due to compatibility issues with the D7100, leaving Tamron.

A friend of mine has lent me his 28-75 2.8 from tamron and I ordered the new 24-70 vc which has now arrived.

love the size and feel of the 28-75, love the extra wide angle, vc, quiet autofocus of the 24-70.

what to do?
