Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC Test

Thinking of spending my store credit on the Tamron 70-300 VC. I would love to get the 70-200 2.8 VC but the fun fund is depleted now, but I have a store credit which will get me $250 off of the price of the 70-300 - so can pick it up for $250 more. Been reading (and seeing on YouTube) some great reviews of that lens too.

I think it's the best in that price/range.

I have shot this scene before and it never gets old.

I was pretty much set to order this, but came across a post that said Nikon bodies recognize the 24-70 and 70-200 (the Tamrons) as being the same lens. That means that any AF finetuning made for one would be carried over to the other. Can anyone who has both lenses confirm this?

I just checked and yes it does ain't that some ****!!! I keep the 70-200 f/2.8 VC on the D7000 and the 24-70 f/2.8 VC on the D700 so I've never noticed.

Crap! I've noticed a few ebay sales within the last month or two for the Nikon 24-70 that people have bought, but never used (less than a year old, never registered, etc.). Maybe I'll just try to score one of those instead. I don't need the VR since this will mostly be an event lens. I simply don't want to be in a situation where I'm swapping out the 24-70 & 70-200 constantly, much like I currently do with the 24-120 & 70-200, plus having to remember what fine tune settings I need to plug in for each. Thanks for confirming this.

No problem if it's any consolation both of mine need no fine tuning at all. I bet the used price of the Nikon 24-70 will nose dive since the VR vertion has come out. Bet you get a killer deal.

They actually have been pretty cheap-around $1200 for a really mint one, which would be great if it hasn't been registered with Nikon. I suppose I could get the Tamron and see if I could live without the fine tuning on each (I had some values plugged in on my D600, but have yet to do so on my D750). Decisions, decisions.

I'm right there with you. The 70-200 has been great & the 15-30 was a pleasant surprise. Only things that bug me about the Nikon is having a really long freaking lens zoomed to 24mm (opposite of what it should be), and all the posts on multiple forums about broken mounts, rubber grips needing replacement, screwed up zooming mechanism, etc. I know there are a ton of these lenses out there, but there also seems to be a ton of complaints, which is why I'd only consider buying a "used" one that hasn't been registered. The price they are at now is way overpriced IMO.

If you have a local shop I'd get the Tamron and test it. My copy was excellent, no fine tuning needed. I hate buying used glass because it always keeps me wondering...,

Yeah, me too. I'll probably order the Tamron sometime this month. I realize I've made that claim before, but I'm pretty serious this time. This one added to my others will finally cover all my shooting needs.

Ended up buying a used Nikon 24-70 lens that essentially has never been used, from someone I know. I'll give it a workout & do a bit of comparing against my 24-120. If I don't like it at the end, I can easily sell it for more than I paid. I realize I must sound pretty stupid having any fears about the "mighty" Nikon, but I'll see soon enough if those fears of mine are founded. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, in the right type of conversation. The only thing that tipped the scales for me is the claimed AF speed and accuracy.

On another note, has anyone seen the new Pentax 24-70, which many are assuming is a repackaged Tamron?

Hi Guys,

Is this sharp enough at 70mm 2.8?

When using ViewNX2 for converting the image to a smaller size, is there a lot of sharpening happening in the process?

Hi Rick, thanks for your inputs. I just want to make sure my copy is good.

Another samples here. No edit only resize 75% from original 6000x4000. Let me know what you think.
