Day 46 - Feb 15, 2013

Today was an unusual day.. I had an idea for todays pic.. it was at home tonight so I almost did noty take my camera cuz I knew I was not gonna get out at lunch. On my way out, I hesitated, then grabbed it anyway, boy was I glad I did.

I was at my desk when Kelley, who works for me came by and said "Grab your camera and come outside! They is a huge bird on Dan's truck! It might be an owl" Grabbed the bag, changed to the 200 and headed outside. There were at least 8 people milling around with cell phones and this is what they were looking at.

I took a bunch of shots like above from different angles etc. Once everyone
was pretty well done, I moved in closer... He was not startled at all.

I finally moved across the lot and was only a couple parking spots down

I went back into work very pleased with my captures and hoping that
I would get some decent ones when I imported to LR.

I think I did, at least I am pleased... It is a Red-Tail Hawk.

Great shots, Pat!!!! There has only been a few times when I didn't have a camera with me and almost each time there was a picture I wish I could have taken.

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate the comment! You are so right on not having the camera with... I have already had a couple of occasions but none catastophic... (this one would have been!) I mean, I missed some ducks cuz I did not have a telephoto (I have duck pictures and probably better).. I missed a military transport plane overhead (no camera) but I have planes and copters...

When will I ever get that close to a hawk again??? Glad that I did not learn that lesson the hard way!!! :)

Bonus for day 46!

I had seen samples about "painting with light". Last night, around 11:30 pm decided to go try one as I had a bunch of stuff sitting on a mirrored coffee table in the family room. So off I went, set up the tripod, got a focus and turned off the lights. With a 20 second exposure, I painted with a penlight...

Hey, It Worked!!! Now granted it is not one to write home about but for an non-setup, no idea what would happen or how it would like I was happy...

1. It worked (took 2 this was the best)
2. I learned something new
3. Ok, its not that bad for 1st try
4. I liked the reflection on the mirror

I will be trying some more in the future when I have some planned subjects/themes and and have time to work on the "paint" technique. I had fun, learning more every day...

Day 47 - Feb 16, 2013 - PART 2

Ok, it was another day of learning... I have some radio triggers so I can do some off flash work so picked a couple projects to try out the stuff.

Today - Set up and capture water drops falling into a pan...

I had fun with this... Not only did I learn to do it and succeed (at least in my mind), but I tested out my
triggers, Speedlight etc...

I have another project to try tomorrow...

I have to try the water droplets sometime.

Here is the setup I used.....

baking pan with white paper propped behind

DSC_3731.jpg

Tripod & Flash position to pan. It is all close...
Small box to raise flash.

DSC_3728.jpg

Water bag hanging from ceiling light (I know, real professional!)
I took a couple test shots for exposure setting..
Manual ISO 100, f/8 1/200
Flash (Manual) started at 1/32nd power (I think) I later upped to a 1/16

DSC_3729.jpg

When all was set, I poked a small hole .. I used manual focus.
(used AF to focus on a pen at drop location, then switched to manual)
I was trying to time the shutter with medium success, then went to continuous
mode (maybe 5 shot bursts) with better success.. Its all timing, more you shoot,
the better odds of getting the "good one"

Great instructions Pat. I actually did a water drop onto a mirror last night for my 365. Did not go well. I think ill try your way next time, the results were great.

Thanks for the lesson. Nice job!

Ted, thank you... I have learned so much here that I can never repay... and I continue to do so everyday. I am happy to be able to share justa little back in the hopes that I may help someone or motivate someone to try something new! You were my HDR inspiration!

Again, this was not my brainstorm but ideas from the internet... but I am happy to share!

Glad that I could help... drop on a mirror?? that seems much tougher!!
I had a very small needle hole, if I did it over again, I would have used a slightly larger hole
(I did open it some later). The colors were nothing more than changing WB or temp&tint slider
adjust in light room.

Thank you for your kind words...

Thank you Marcel.. Absolutely fun to learn!! I get inspired by all the people and their photos here and my own desire to learn. There is so much in print and video to get ideas fun.... I had picked up some lighting "stuff" and wanted to to try and learn some of these specialty techniques.. I just wish I did not work 55 hours or so so I would have more time to play!

I have one half setup for this morning I am gonna try. That will be my 365 for today later!
