Double Diamond in the Rough


Shown here is the Rochelle "Double Diamond". Railway crossings, generally referred to as diamond crossings, occur where one railway line crosses over another.

Rochelle, IL. is one of the train-watching hotspots in the Midwest, a place where two main rail lines cross as they head west from Chicago. Here, the two double tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad (bottom right) cross two double tracks of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (bottom left). There are very few places in the nation where this happens. The bottom line for train watchers is that 100-plus freight trains thunder across the diamonds (the shape of the rails at the crossing) in Rochelle every 24 hours, that is an average of a train every 15 minutes. :D

The "W" sign here tells the engineer of a train of an approaching crossing, he must sound his horn at this point as he approaches. So toot your own horn. WHOOO, WHOOO!

Ok, the challenge say "Railroad Tracks". I've been shooting "Tracks" all week, had to do one with the train element in it. Shot from one of my favorite locations and angles.

BTW, I'm leaning on the pedestrian crossing gate while shooting this, so I am 100% safe. I do have other shots from this location that are even closer, but had to leave the track element in for this possible challenge shot. Tomorrow is going to be the hardest day, I have to shoot one more and then pick an entry.

Small industrial siding out side of town. Been waiting all week for the switch stand to be in the right position, of course on the last day of the challenge.

Well done, Rick. Knowingly or not, I think you've created an interesting perspective here by creating a good line for our eye to follow along the tracks. Had you been standing on them, I think this composition would've lost some of its zip.

Is that the IORY?

I hear ya about RailPictures.net, man. I tried a ton of times too and gave up a long time ago. Somewhere on that mess of a website is a list of their requirements, most of which are pretty stupid. Shortlines are the best! They're far more likely to let you take photos than the big dogs.

Here's the paint scheme for my freelanced model railroad (N scale) on an RSC2. Below that is my system map that shows interchanges with other railroads, had mine actually existed in 1953.

Sorry, but glad to hear your experience with RP.net. I don't feel so bad now. I really beat myself up over my Kate photo's I took this year when they were rejected.

Got another site you can post on that does not need to be approved to post if your interested.

Oh, I've found a few. I'm sure our rails have crossed on other sites and we just didn't know it.

Truth be told, I haven't taken rail photos for some time. Not since I moved. There just isn't as much traffic around here, and what little there is, it's all CSX.
