Re: Nikon D7100 is now officially announced!

Ken Rockwell is probably already working on telling everyone how this is the best camera ever and everything else prior is crap. Just saying.

Maybe time to 'upgrade' from my beloved D5100?
the only cons seem to be the non-swivel display and shorter battery life. Many more positives....

A lot of stuff on here to ponder, particularly given my current thinking on possibly upgrading from my D7000 to a D800, or even a second D600.

Absolute pros in its favor (for me at least):
  • 5 frame brakceting
  • 51 point autofocus
  • battery compatibility with the D7000, D600 & D800
  • 6 fps (hope they gave it a bigger buffer)
  • 24MPS
  • D600 form factor (button) match (except why couldn't they also keep the secondary WB, QUAL, ISO functions on the same buttons as the D600?!)
  • And while not a real factor for me, I'm happy to see the stereo mics for video at the top of the prism and not where I can put my fingers over them on the front.

What I'm a little curious about is the 1.3 Crop DX vs. the old 1.5. While this still gives me a bit of boost in what my telephotos will capture (500mm = 650mm instead of the old 750mm) with added image size (50% more MP's over the D7000 likely makes it a wash in the "pixels per bird category"), what effect does it have with existing DX lenses? Were all Nikon DX lenses capable of fully covering a 1.3 crop, or will some now yield runout on edges and/or corners (the 18-105 is obviously OK if it's the kit lens)? What about other manufacturer's lenses? Canon's APS-C sensor is even smaller than the old 1.5 crop (it's 1.62), so I would imagine that the Sigmas and Tokinas of the world were working with 1.5 in mind knowing that anything beyond that didn't really matter. I could surely take the couple DX lenses I have left and shoot them in FX mode on my D600 and do some geometry. My long lenses are full frame, so I'm more curious than concerned. The only one that would concern me slightly is my Sigma 8-16mm which may show runout at 8mm (I wanted to check that one in FX mode anyway).

A 1/2 the price of a D600 it's going to be a tempting get, given all my prior ponderings. Would love to be able to play with one for a while first. I'll probably wait to see what issues there are to shake out on this one (each release seems to have some). Then again, maybe not. LOL Looking forward to reading some reviews.

I was questioning myself as well about this 1.3DX cropping feature with the new D71000.

Now, I think that this is probably a cropping possiblitly added to the already cropped DX sensor. So, in fact, a 200mm lens that would cover a field view of a 300mm on FX could become a 390mm. There probably would be a darkened window in the viewfinder like the crop available on the D600 or D800 when using the DX mode with DX lenses.

But this is only my suspicion as I haven't seen or read that much about this new feature. But it's the only explanation that makes sense to me for now.

I think you have the math wrong. The 200mm would cover 200mm in FX, 300mm on the 1.5 DX and 260mm on the 1.3 DX. To my understanding a 200mm DX lens is still 200mm but just covers a smaller sensor size. In other words a 200mm DX and 200mm FX lens will look identical on a FX sensor with the exception of the areas not covered by tthe DX lens (i.e. the center portion of the frame is the same).

So I'm misreading all this and the "1.3 DX mode" 1.3X crop on top of a normal DX sensor? I'm so confused!! LOL

Though that makes more sense than a larger DX sensor. So the 200mm becomes 300mm in DX and 390mm in 1.3DX as Marcel said. OK, I can live with that, particularly since I can now shoot 7 fps and my 500mm becomes (whipping out a calculator) a 950mm. That'll do for bird shots.

Yup, at least I think this is what it is… It does make it confusing. Now, as far as my math…:(, please note that I was referring to the field of view. This meant that by putting a 200mm lens on 1.5 DX you would see the same thing as you would see if you had a 300 on FX.

Sounds like in this mode you will end up with the same pixels per bird as the D800 cropped.

I am kind of glad I did not get the D7000 two years ago, this is a great upgrade from the D90.

I'm going to wait to see if any issues come up after March 21st, Nikons track record has not been good with their last few new releases.

Either way I'm going to be all over the D7100 sometime in April.

This reminds me of my friend who upgraded to a D7000 last year. You can see him beam with pride when he holds his D7000. His famous last words were "it is my last camera I will never need another one"...until a few weeks from now when he sees this new 7100...LOL

Your D7000's are now obsolete and not any good anymore... :)

I am fairly new here (months) and have received so much help from others on the web site... I want to donate my services...

I will collect and properly dispose of all of the "no good" D7000's as a service to this wonderful community. In fact, to make it easier, I will even pay the shipping! :)

My understanding of the sensor and cropping is;

It's a DX sensor (APS-C) so will have the standard 1.5 crop applied to it anyway. (A 200mm lens in 35mm equivalent will still be 300mm).

What the new 1.3x crop does is take the available view, crop it by 1.3x (thereby in effect creating a banding around the current frame), at the same time as reducing the MP available and letting you shoot using all 51 focus points at a higher fps. And because your original 51 points now touch the edges of your frame (as opposed to centred) they can focus faster thus allowing better 'sports' type shots.
And at the same time, your 200mm now is effectively a 260mm.

(Or another explanation that just came to mind is.. when you enable the 1.3x crop mode, pretend your D7100 is FX camera and you've just stuck a DX lens on it.. it will act in the same way (more or less)).
