Thanks Eddie. Now, don't mistake me for just a birder. I love all nature. I live in a big city, Toronto. 4th largest in north america.

So, it is either, shots of Dogs, Cats or birds..... I pick Birds! LOL

Glad you are enjoying them. I plan on getting out of the city soon to see if I can get some other type of nature shots. Maybe even some architecture. All depends on what I see and if the weather co-operates.

I will post them up if I can get them.

Check this little fellow out....

White Throat Sparrow

Back side of a Nuthatch. These guys are fast, typically come in quick, snatch a seed and leave. Best image I took of the bunch.

Hi Kiwi,

I have done a review of the lens on PlanetNikon. It is a lengthy review, you may enjoy it:

Nikon 400mm f3.5 ED-IF AI-S Lens - PlanetNikon Forum

If you want to see the images I posted (many are duplicated here) you have to join, it is FREE. The ADMIN is busy and you have to request membership a couple of times to get his attention. If you can't email me and I will!!

I bought mine on ebay from a Japanese store. You can always find one on ebay in good condition. Do not buy a scratched or damaged one, nice ones always come up, be patient. $1600US shipped is what you should pay or less if you are lucky. Do not pay more.

Nikkor * ED 400mm f/3.5 AI-S Lens Nikon AIS 400 f3.5 | eBay

Experience with a TELECONVERTER you ask? Yes, the image above is take with a 2x Nikon manual teleconverter. Nothing special. Paid $70 for it used. This is an Ai-S lens. Works PERFECTLY on my D800, no special attachments or fiddling.

The D800 has a range finder in it, bottom left corner of the viewfinder, it looks like this:

> • <

When the green dot in the middle lights up, you are focused. Good luck getting a bird in flight, this is MANUAL FOCUS!!!! However, you can see the type of images I am getting, FANTASTIC GLASS at a great price. Please, read my review, it will give you a very objective understanding of what you will get and what to expect.

Here are a couple more pictures for you!!! All taken with a TC Enjoy .....

D800 and the power of Nikon Glass.... what a combo!

I tried to read your review and it said I had to register first. When I tried to do that it said that the administration was not accepting any new members right now. Do you think you could post your review here so I can read it?

Grandpaw,

I emailed the Admin, apparently, the site has been inundated with SPAMMERS the last few weeks, give me a day to get a solution for you.

I can post the text, but it is tedious to go searching for the images and to post them as well. I think I have posted some of the images here somewhere already.

In fact, I would do a lot more posts here of that type, but I don't find the image upload interface here as nice.

Please be patient with me for a day or so and I will try to work something out quickly, one way or the other.

Thanks,

Art

why 1/8000s? for hawk i use 1/1500-1/2000 s

Why?

Because I couldn't freeze them in flight. I took about 200 images that day. I had a feeder set up and a perch and set myself up perpendicular to the flight path.

Because this is manual focus, I had to preset the focus and panning to capture them is almost impossible. So, when they came into my line of sight, I fired off a burst and sorted through to get the best image in the burst.

I kept increasing the shutter speed until I froze the image! Barely got them at 1/8000s!!

Well, Eddie, that is what I intended! :)

I will be honest, I have never enjoyed photography more in my last 35 or so years I have been a hobbyist! Amazing equipment. I have never regretted the purchase. I don't think you will either.

Not only are the photos technically excellent, the sensitivity that you apply to your bird subjects really comes through. Some wonderful photos here. I have a Nikon birding friend that I hope to go out with sometime when the weather is nice as I'm dying to try a 300 mm 2.8 Ai-S I have on the way...and this particular one comes with an added secret weapon....an autofocus converter (the 300 mm is the last generation MF lens before the AF ones came out). In fact, I'll be able to convert any Ai-S lens to autofocus on my D800 pretty soon. ;)

Thank you for the kind words, I am glad to see you are enjoying my images.

You have me really intrigued with your comment on turning an Ai-S to an AF lens. What devise are you talking about?

A few more of my favourite Nikon D800 Images! This camera simply ROCKS!

These two images are taken with my 70-300mm Nikon Zoom Lens. I have not used this lens in a while, but is certainly does continue to perform nicely! It is my go-too lens when I don't know what to take.

These two were taken with my Nikon 400mm Prime lens. I continue to love this lens.
