Too bad I didn't have my macro lens with me, but I used the 85 1.8 G for a few icy plants shots. Although not everything can be in focus, I kind of like the atmosphere for these shots. For the first one, I was literally in the cedar edge and the icy snow kept falling on me. Thank god for water resistant D700.

I like these a lot--I'm not sure a macro would have captured them quite the same! :)

Did you use f/1.8 or something a tad smaller? The other day I tried out a 35mm Sigma lens that has macro capabilities (1:2 and 1:3 so it isn't a true macro). I wasn't happy with the photos as they were of a miniature Christmas tree with mini ornaments so they didn't turn out too large. I might give my 85mm a try after seeing how much I like these with an 85mm! ;)

December 22nd, shots taken in the backyard to show the ice that stuck to trees. It rained almost all night last night and streets are really like a skate ring.

Came back to Line's house tonight and the trees here are even worse than at my place this morning. There have been many electric outage caused by broken trees in the Sherbrooke. We tried to break some of the ice but it was raining so hard we gave up.

Nice shots!!! I have a friend on this site that takes pictures of people at pianos that mention the horizon was tilted if i had posted this, hope he doesn't see it!

But Jeff, looks can be deceiving because what we see here is just the perspective done by the 24-70. I tried to straighten it but the porche post had to be levelled to my eye, otherwise it looks even more tilted. :)

It looks to me that the eve tilts to the left by a few degrees. I like the shot, I just thought I would give you a little jab about it. I'm not seeing anything curved like a wide angle would give you but just the tilt to the left.

Do you have a lot of ice storms where you live? We don't, but one year we had quite a few ice storms which easily left 1-1/2" to 2" of ice on our driveways and walks. The stores sold out of the traditional calcium chloride and rock salt so a salesperson suggested I try some water softening pellets which were at least as big as a large vitamin. I scattered some of them around, and later I was able to use a straight edged shovel as an ice chipper to break the ice into large chunks. That was the only way to clear the walks and driveway.

Be careful out there. It sure looks treacherous even for 4-wheel drive vehicles!

All night long we could hear trees cracking, transformers busting up. There are still a lot of people without electricity since many power lines were hit by falling branches. Snow has started now so we should be OK for X-mas. We'll be careful. :)
