I had a most excellent birthday weekend, through-hiking the Shenandoah valley and Skyline Drive parks! I traveled a total of around 40 km on various trails and saw all manner of neat things, some of which I took photos of, some of which I didn't want to dig through my 9kg pack to find my camera, lol. An epic 5 day journey that took me a month to plan out, and took me all across the mountains and down into the valleys, up into the mountains once again and had me begging for a shower. Most was spend in complete wilderness in a tent under whatever cover I could find, very Bear Gryllys style. The one night I slept at Matthew's Arm campground, I didn't hear or see any bears. Go figure.

So....I think my first real portraiture shoot went pretty well. This girl is submitting to a tattoo magazine called "INKED", I ended up getting paid a $700 acoustic guitar! (I would have done this for free, mind you:) Plus, her friend saw the pictures and wants me to shoot her baby girl soon. Winning.

(Yes, I did get permission to release these, lol.)

I'm glad your firewall let you see my pictures today!
Thank you all so much. I definitely think my photography is progressing into a realm which I didn't ever think it would. I always liked taking photos, but now it's getting to the point where people are really complimenting me and my style and asking ME questions about things!
Again, I can't thank you enough. I humbly accept your critisisms and critiques and only see it getting better from here on out! Next up, 50mm 1.4G!

In my defense, the actual photos above were shot on my d7k with a 40mm 2.8 :)

SO, I just picked up a 50mm 1.4 today. WOW, what the f***!? What an amazing lens! I sure didn't go in there thinking I'd walk out with a 3rd party lens, but the results already speak for themselves in the hour that I've had it..

HOLY BOKEH, BATMAN!!

Yup, I sure do love them. Seems like a lot of people are scared of them for some reason. I was at first too way back when and thought that 35mm for instance, was the only plane of focus that was available when using them. Turns out they all have a minimum focus distance, so you're not really "limited" per se. I just feel like I see the world so much differently through a prime.

In other news, this girl is becoming my muse, I think.. Sorry for posting so much of her, but the camera just eats her up! Also, the Sigma is amazing. Definitely blows away the Nikon offering and I'm so glad I went with this lens. It just outright nukes the background in a creamy messy blur. I can't wait to get inspired and shoot some nighttime stuff soon..
