Just home from a long weekend and haven't had a chance to browse the forums yet, but here is another night one from the lake.

The thump you heard was my jaw bouncing off my keyboard!

Some amazing images, well done. I really like the sunset city on the hill top.

Hey thank you. I really like your work with the birds, shooting Raptors and Herons is one of my favorite things to do with photography. Some day I hope to own the 500, or at least the 200-400. For now though I've just been enjoying your work. Cheers.

These are all really fantastic. Are you doing HDR here at all?

Mind sharing your EXIF on some of these? I like to copy settings and play with them to see how things look...

Thank you, very nice of you to say! I too hope to add a 500 or 600mm to the arsenal one day. However, it is not the be-all to bird images. Since I use a 300mm and a 1.4TC, stalking a bird is my biggest ally. I am lucky we have areas that birds frequent all the time so I can learn where they feed, get used to their habits, and eventually, get a half decent image. There is always a bird or two who doesn't mind me hanging around, allowing for some great opportunities for an image.

Last year, it was the Great Blue Heron, this year, I am having more luck with Egrets and Night Herons. I have also learned to be more patient this year, which I think is vital to being a good nature photographer.

Regardless, I am looking forward to some longer glass and a portable blind to make things a little easier!

No JPar I didn't do any of those in HDR - I process my RAW files in lightroom 4. All the info is tagged to the photos, but you need a EXIF reader which maybe there is a free one out there anyone? If you have any particlar ones in mind let me know and I can look for you. Most all of the night shots are 20-30 second exposures, with ISO anywhere from 1250-3200. I try to get my f stops up around 7.1 or 8, but some are down around 5.6 so I don't have to go over 3200 on the ISO. I set the shutter and aperature manually and I didn't bracket but purposely over exposed about a stop and a half to get more light in the lake. Lightroom allows you to easily pull the highlights back down. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. Really helpful.

With night shots, I've been keeping away from higher ISOs because I hate noise in my pictures, but it looks like you've been able to pull it off just fine. Then again, it could be that you're using a D800 and I'm using a D3000. :)

Thanks Misti, I had never really messed with the Neutral Density filter before, but I can see how it can be a useful tool after using it for that shot.

Today we went for a quick hike in Glacier Park, my 3 year old was with me so I didn't have a lot of time to set up shots, and it was really smokey from some near by forest fires, but here are some of the shoots.

I never go hiking with out my ND8 it is my slowed effect river shooting buddy. next step for me is to find a good polarizing filter I don't care for the one I have its hard to get it off and on the lens.
Look forward to seeing more of your ND shots.

Just messing with the new lens, and having a go at portraits, which is something I don't have much practice at. I love the 85 though.

Where you off to Billy?

I wish I was going to Italy, or anywhere in Europe, but I guess Portland Or. and then the coast will have to do. I love the Pacific coast though (if it isn't foggy) and am hoping for a good bit of time for some photos. I am preparing myself for 11 hours of "Are we there yet?" - it is currently my daughter's favorite thing to say on road trips. :)
