How small can the subject be?

Came upon this deer on the frozen lake, but had a wide angle lens on the camera. This is what I did... it seems pleasing to me if a large version of the image is viewed. Or is it just a jumbled mess? Does it work for you? Be honest...

A CLS system using my older Nikon speed lights and 3rd party budget gear?

I remember researching this a while back and thinking I had it figured out, but never went through with purchasing the gear. My situation: From my F4s film days, I have two SB-24 speedlights and a compact SB-22s speedlight. I later purchased an SB-800 for my D750. I'm looking for a tool that...

Checking new lenses for autofocus tuning

I just picked up a very nice used AF-S 24mm f/1.8G. It looks almost unused. My testing showed it was softer, even at the center, than expected wide open but it did well after stopping down to 2.8 or 4. Lab tests in the reviews showed that it should have still had excellent center sharpness...

    post your aviation shots!

Headed right over me while I was out for a walk on the frozen lake... Flying low over a white, frozen lake at high noon provided for some good reflected light on the bottom of the C-17: As (bad) luck would have it, I only had my AF-S 35mm f/1.8G with me. Its fantastic sharpness allowed for...

The AF Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED push-pull zoom is a bargain...

...because one of the reasons folks don't care for them is the lack of a tripod mount on this heavy lens. Optically, it's very nice, especially considering the bargain prices you can pick them up for. I looked into work-arounds for the lack of tripod mount and found an expensive (and...

    Post your snow event

Nothing artistic... just a snapshot of one of my favorite winter phenomena; the snow pinwheel, or icy albino cinnamon roll: Totally natural, by the way... not initiated by a human.

January 2022 Monthly Assignment - Something New

The wind blew very hard as the temperatures dropped below zero. All the water from the waves splashing up on the shoreline brush and trees gave them a new coating...

Thoughts on a lightweight ballhead for hiking?

I have an Arca Swiss B1 w/QR that I've enjoyed for many years on a heavy aluminum Bogen tripod. Before the B1, I used a Bogen 3025 3-D head, which I still have. Last year I upgraded the old Bogen 3401 leg set to a nice Benro TMA38CL carbon tripod with thoughts of taking it along more on hikes...

Capture NX-D won't convert NEF files to JPEG

Everything was working fine a week or so ago when I worked on holiday photos but now I can't get NX-D to convert NEFs to JPEGs. I put in the desired settings after hitting the "Convert Files" icon, hit "Start", the little conversion que box pops up for a split second, and the JPEG never show up...

    Diffusion dome or index card?

You are absolutely correct... my mistake. I can lift that side of the diffuser slightly so the intact plastic between the tiny hole I made and the edge of the diffuser depresses the switch. From memory, I thought I flipped the diffuser around. That was what I initially thought would work, but...

Weekly Challenge Sep. 29 - Oct. 5: Reflections

The shoreline reflection section of a larger photo, turned vertically shows some interesting stuff... I see some faces in there! Taken on film with a Nikon FG many years ago. The other image is a favorite of mine, but was taken with a point-n-shoot on a camping trip.

    post your aviation shots!

Here's an old one (around 1984 or so), shot on Tri-X with an F2AS and a --gasp-- 43-86mm Zoom Nikkor. USN A-6's on the flight line at Fallon, NV. (A terrible low-quality scan... the original is sharp.)

I thought I told you to put the lid back on when you're done...

Seen this morning on Rt. 22A, just south of Vergennes, VT. D200, AF-S 18-70 f/3.4-4.5G ED

Capture NX-D -- trouble converting files

For the past several years, I've used Nikon's Capture NX-D for post-processing. The last few times I've used it, I've had trouble converting some files. I bring up the RAW file, make my adjustments, select the "Convert File" button, fill out the necessary info, and when I click "start," it...

    How many settings/adjustments on a D750?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know off-hand how many different adjustments or settings there are on a D750?
