    Iceboat

I don't know much about iceboats, but I'm told this one is very old. Too cold to walk out and get a closer shot, so I did the best I could with the zoom. There are some newer more colorful ones around here, but none to be seen yet this year.

    D3100 camera repair?

If you have a friendly shop that won't charge you, it might be good to have them look at it quickly and see if it is a settings problem. I would not pay for a service until you understand how your camera works so you can be sure for yourself it is just not a wrong setting. While your camera has...

    ISO issue on manual?

This sure sounds like auto iso as @hark said. Setting the iso yourself does not convince me you are not in Auto ISO. When in Auto ISO, you can still go through the usual motions as if manually setting your ISO, but if auto iso is active you would actually just be changing the minimum iso for...

    How close?

Here is my Tamron 60mm. My working distance is ~4" (~10cm) I overshot the left edge to be sure I didn't cut it off. Looks about right for dx.

    Vintage Packaging Brings A Smile

Same here. Its nearly 40 years and I still find and make use of the remaining few bits of my dad's workshop inventory. I have seen that happy man logo before. I think it was on some toilet bowl gaskets and pipe wrap insulation. Anyone that has replaced a toilet or crawled under a house to wrap...

    Hope you all OK?!

It's a comfortable 15F (~-9c) here this morning in the sun! I walked around outside for awhile to get some fresh air. Too many days of well below zero and strong wind. I live in a little black hole of weather... when the air is clear with no wind, we tend to drop about 10 degrees below the...

    Help with moon shots please

I went out last night to try some moon shots. I took MANY handheld shots of the moon. I could not get a sharp one handheld. Tried manual focus, auto focus, single servo, continuous servo, vr on/off, various apertures, up to 1000 shutter speed. Autofocus seemed to easily lock on. Manual focus...

    Macro Add-ons

I never used the fish eye things. I have had some fun with the macro filters in the past before I got a real macro lens. I have a real cheap set from ebay. Very shallow depth of field and some distortion, but you can still get a taste for macro. You really need a tripod and should manual focus...

    Forum Message Notifications Off?

I just checked and I haven't gotten any notifications today either. I checked under my settings and had 8 subscribed threads I should have gotten emails for today. Sorry, I have to try the new tagging feature.... @RockyNH and @jdeg

    Focus problem

Here is a quick Lightroom edit of one of your shots. You should be able to do a lot better with the original full size jpg, or re-shoot a similar scene and try RAW. I didn't bother messing with colors or anything like that, just a quick lighten shadows and darken highlights.

    That was tough.

    Post your Insect shots

Here's a nest of the nasty black and white things on my friend's garage. They really make me nervous, but your shot is beautiful.

    Just screw up my sensor!

Years ago, I ruined a SLR focus screen just trying to lightly brush some dust off with a cotton swab, zero pressure. Cotton will definitely will scratch plastic. It will also scratch the shiny film of a front surface mirror. I am hoping cotton would not scratch the glass? filter in front of the...

    Lightroom 5 Resizing - Article

I found this blog article about export resizing options in Lightroom 5. It answered my beginner questions about export options like width & height, dimensions, megapixels, etc. so I'll pass it along. Resizing Images in Lightroom 5 (LR5) The comments after the article are useful too.

Lightroom Export vs Print to File???

I'm doing some Lightroom 5 learning tonight. Specifically trying to get myself a good understanding on preparing an image for printing at a lab. Exporting seems reasonably straight forward to me. But then I read that some folks alternatively print to jpg for uploading to a lab. I can't find a...

Wedding band Photography , * Need opinion *

I tried with my Tamron 60mm macro. F16, 1/4 sec, iso 100 I'm attaching the crop screen too so you can see how much is removed. This is not really macro, but as long as your rings look sharp at catalog size, this technique might be good. Contrast, clarity and sharpness turned up a bit in...

Wedding band Photography , * Need opinion *

I would experiment, but first try would be the 90 from at least 2 feet away, iso 100, f16 on a tripod. Focus on the top edge. Use 2 second self timer so you don't shake the camera. Experiment with f-stop and more distance to get the depth of field. Picture will be small, not really a macro shot...

    Understanding Auto Focus -Birds

I tried a couple new things, bird in flight (a big slooow bird in flight, lol) and stepping outside my comfort zone of single point focus. I thought I had the focus thing all figured out, but now I am uncertain. I was in AF-S Auto area. I should have been in AF-C, right? I think AF-C would...
