    Post your Moon Shots

OK, this is my best so far. I bracketed by 1 stop increments, then picked the best. Had to put the camera in the garage for an hour to warm up, as it's really humid outside and the lens fogs badly coming out of climate control. Set up on the tripod and used the self timer to keep things steady...

Natural Night Filter for Light Pollution

I would think the dehaze feature in Lightroom would remove at lot of the issues with light pollution. I shot this picture of the moon last night. There was a thin layer of clouds and I live in a decent sized suburban area, so lots of light pollution. Here are two iterations of the same image...

Nice lighting tonight. Not so good for low ASAs and high shutter speeds, but great for mood and saturated colors.

Survival gear when out shooting wildlife

My response to another thread got me to thinking. I'm a retired aircrew member, and spent a lot of time over the years taking survival/survival equipment training and refresher courses. The mindset has stuck with me, and when my buddy and I hunt, I normally carry a good bit of survival gear with...

    Post Your Birds (3)

Well, after thoroughly cleaning all surfaces of the back door glass, I've managed to bring down the degradation of the image quality to a semi manageable level. Still not great, but right now I can't get shots of the birds from outside. Maybe later in the year, when they have gotten used to...

    Post your Squirrel pictures

Trying my hand at at bird feeding station. Getting just a few birds and a lot of squirrels. Set up the camera at the back door, as it's too hot to sit outside, and the critters are easily spooked. It works well from a standpoint of being reasonably close and they don't spook. Problem is...

    Post your Moon Shots

Focus tracking only affects focus. The moon will remain in the same plane of focus regardless of movement of the moon or movement of the camera. The issue with handheld in these situations is camera movement, not focus. I don't think the moon moves enough in the sky to be a problem with the...

Post your pictures that beg for a caption.

The title says it all. Post em with or without your own caption, or post a great caption for someone else's picture. Please, just post your own pictures, not those from the web. Mods, please move this to off topic if appropriate. I'll start it off. Jerry decided to wear spandex while mowing...

    Post Your Birds (3)

Had the D3400 set up on the monopod with the new 200-500 and a female cardinal was in the crepe myrtle tree out front. This was after a rain shower and it was nice and soft lighting, although I would have liked to have a little more light to bring up the shutter speed without resorting to a...

Do Images Need to be Square?

I'm no expert on forum requirements, but I do routinely post photos here. I always just size them to 1000 on the longer side and let the software choose the short side based on the original aspect ratio of the image. This one is 1000 x 668.

Multiple exposure with nikon mirrorless cameras

Are the settings you are using in Multiple Exposures the same for both the 5 and 7? I would bring up the Multiple Exposure menu in both and make sure they are identical. The other thing I would check is that you have the latest firmware for both. Here is the page for the online manual...

    Let's see some reptiles...

No, I don't mind that at all. I actually did exactly the same thing to this image, but ended up liking the original better. Here it is edited from the original RAW file to preserve more detail before compressing.

    Let's see some reptiles...

I was torn with this one. If I crop heavily, there is a lot of really cool detail in the feet and belly. Unfortunately, it also tends to play havoc with the composition. OK, I went ahead and cropped it, and uploaded. Now that I see it on it's own, the first one is definitely the way to go...

    Monopod suggestions

Which one, the Bogen 3025, the Desmond or the Ulanzi? I find the Bogen to be rather fiddly on the tripod. With the little bit I used it on the monopod, I found it easy to use, since I was only interested in adjustment in one plane. For those who aren't familiar with it, this is the Bogen...

    Post your Moon Shots

Re: Moon HDR Went out and shot a couple with the D3400. Hard to tell whether they have more detail than the full frame images. My gut feeling is that they are. AF on the D3400 worked just fine as well.

    Post your Moon Shots

Ok, ya'll have me hooked on moon shots. Problem is, it's difficult to do something different. I managed to do that to a small degree with the previous post. The thin clouds made for some additional interest in the image. The best of the shots was a little overexposed. Thought I work to correct...
