    Post your Train shots!

Here's one of my favorite photos, taken in the mid-90s at Mountainair, NM at the summit of the Santa Fe's Belen Cutoff on their mainline. Kodachrome 64, Nikon N2020, 80-200mm Nikkor Zoom.

    Post your Train shots!

Here's one taken at Melrose, NC in 1986 on what was the steepest standard gauge railroad grade in the U.S. on Saluda Mountain in western NC. Nikon N2020 on K-64. Again, sorry about the lousy scan quality. You can see a portion of the grade in this photo. I'm standing on the "escape track"...

    Post your Train shots!

Note sure if I should post this one or not, but it caught my eye nearly 20 years ago and I just had to take it. Nikon N2020.

    Old mechanical clocks

You've got some excellent mechanical skills there vindex1963. Very cool stuff you've been workin on! This is likely becoming a lost art. About 40 years ago the Santa Fe Rwy. had a massive corporate "garage sale" of miscellany, including vintage wall clocks from around the system. These were...

Here's another shot, this of a curve and coalyard on the N Scale layout.

    Post your Train shots!

Do any of y'all have fun with model trains? Here's a photo of the anthracite coal breaker on my N Scale road. I scratchbuit the breaker and a late friend painted and weathered it for me.

    Post your Train shots!

Took these two too. It took nearly two hours from the same train to appear -- he couldn't get his brakes pumped up, so someone had to walk the entire train to find what was wrong. Second shot was just foolin' around, handheld at 1/30 Sec.

    Post your Train shots!

Shot some rail photos today. This one was taken from the same spot as one of the shots I posted previously, but at 160mm. This is the shot that I wanted in the first place, but my 55-20mm was in my truck instead of with me! Nice to have a second chance.

    Post your Train shots!

With the winter seaon in mind, I thought I'd post this one taken in Knoxville, TN of an Alco C-420 taken almost exactly 35 years ago to the day. L&N Alcos were everywhere in the region back then. Taken with my Nikkormat FTn and K-64. Sorry about the poor scan quality. It's a good thing that...

    Post your Train shots!

Here's one from 1980, taken with my bulletproof Nikkormat FTn and Nikkor 50mm Lens on Kodachrome 64. Northwestern Station, Chicago, IL. Scanned on a not-so-good scanner. This beautiful terminal was razed in 1984 and replaced with the modern Ogilve Transportation Center.

    Post your Train shots!

Went out again looking for trains this day. It was somewhat overcast, but I got this one. I like the compostion with the dispatcher's phone box and the relay bungalow with the location name upon it, but hate those phone wires. I changed my focus setting to spot, as I noticed that the camera...

Is There A "Best" Video Format To Save Family Videos?

For Christmas my wife gave me a Diamond OneTouch Video Capture kit to convert our Beta, VHS and 8mm Videotapes to DVD. I haven't opened the package yet, but I was wondering if there's a "best" video format to covert to (such as MOV, MPEG4, AVI, WMV, FLV, etc.) or if I convert to play on a DVD...

    Post your Train shots!

Went out today to get a shot of a CSX freight that now operates in day light hours instead of at night. I'd always wanted to take a picture of this scene with the depot and train and after 20 years, I have it. It's a light density line and this is the only daylight train running in this...

    Attic Find - Graflex 22

Found this Revere 22 3D Stereo Photo Viewer in Grandma's closet. It was the companion to the Revere 33 3D Stereo Camera, which is gone. You can see what the slides look like in this photo. The 3D effect is exactly like the Viewmaster us Baby Boomers might remember. I took a look at some of...

    Attic Find - Graflex 22

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I put it here. My child has a strong interest in photography and when this Graflex 22 was found in Grandma's attic this morning, there was great excitement. My D5100 knelt in respect when it took this photo: It's in rough shape, but will make a great...

    Interesting Signs

Puzzling signs always catch my eye. I shot this one with my D5100. If you're short on cash at a time of bereavement, this is the place to stop. :( Sandpatch

    Reflcting Ball

Speaking of reflections and balls, I happened upon this shot taken this summer with my D5100 and my ancient Radio Shack beach ball. It was fun trying different compositions with the shot. No HDR here, but the category fit. :-)

What Eactly Is Programmed Autoexposure Mode Anyway?

Can some of y'all help me to understand what our P Mode is exactly? I've read all I can about it, but I still don't understand just what it offers. I shot this photo with my D5100 last night in a very dark setting using P Mode with no idea of what I was doing. The photo is completly unedited...

    Happy Thanksgiving

As if on cue, this fellow showed up in our front yard -- a wild turkey! He agreed to pose for a photo if I'd not put him on the table. :D

    Post your Train shots!

Shot these in Asheville, NC today using my 55-200mm AF-S ED. I went in hope of getting a splendid shot of NS's Wabash Heritage unit, but as you see, it was tucked deeply within the engine terminal and I didn't want to trespass and risk injury or trouble to get a shot. I took a 200mm shot and...
