    Post your Train shots!

Former Norfolk & Western position light signals at Radford, VA taken April 2013. This type of signal is normally associated with former Pennsylvania Railroad lines, but the N&W had them too. Sadly, these lovely signals are being rapidly displaced by modern, low-maintenance designs.

    Post Your Bridges HERE

Another eastbound coal drag, but this time on the heavy bridge at Bramwell, VA in October 1997. The train is actually moving away from us -- those are pushers on the rear end. [Nikon N2020, Nikkor 80-200mm, Kodachrome]

    Post Your Bridges HERE

Eastbound coal drag coming off the bridge at Maybeury, WV on the NS (former Norfolk & Western) Pocohantas Division. Lots of heavy bridges and heavy trains on this line. [Nikon N2020, 50mm Nikkor, Kodachrome]

    Post Your Bridges HERE

CSX (former Clinchfield) bridge at Speers Ferry, VA with NS (former Southern) bridge below, taken March 1995. The trees have grown so tall and thick around the bridges that much of this view is obscured today. [Nikon 2020, 50mm Lens, Kodachrome]

    Last Weekend's Truck/Tractor Pullin'

The noise level at those pulls must be deafening! I shot these more staid Ford tractors on an overcast day at a little area fair. I enjoy going each year and in the afternoon they have a vintage tractor parade which is a splendid sight and a delight to the ears.

    Mystery Nikkor Lens Holder

One of the items left to me by my Dad is a Nikkor lens holder pictured here. It's made of plastic. The top reads Nikkor and the bottom reads Nippon Kogaku K.K. Japan. Within the case are two rounds of white corrugated and a piece of Styrofoam. There is no part number on it anywhere. Does...

    Post your Train shots!

I'm normally not a "roster shot" railfan, but this one was worth the film. It was taken 11/02/1987 in Montgomery, AL and WM 3798 was the very last locomotive to survive in Western Maryland Rwy. paint. The WM was a fine road, but found itself engulfed by CSX lines and was merged and largely...

    40mm Close-Up's

Have you ever worked with the Food setting on your D5100? I have, but only once with this shot of my wife's 50th Birthday cake and the lighting was poor. We are frugal people and it's become a family joke that we recycle the half-melted number candles on future birthdays. :D

    Post your Train shots!

Former B.& O. passenger station in Grafton, WV in 1986 [Nikon N2020, Nikkor 80-200mm, Kodachrome 64] Built in 1911. Such pride, materials, craftsmanship and resulting permanence is rarely seen in architecture today.

Chicago Architecture Boat Tour - Lens suggestions

Shot this of the Sears (er Willis) Tower a few weeks ago using my wife's Nikon Coolpix P100 on an overcast day. It was the first time that I'd been home to Chicago in over 30 years and I was a bit bewildered at all of the changes. Thankfully they haven't changed the street names, so I was able...

    Post your Train shots!

My wife is looking at the photos taken with her Nikon Coolpix P100 and we just found another CP shot I'd forgotten about, taken at Amtrak's Milwaukee Airport Station last week. We had just stepped off our evening train and a southbound CP freight showed up. She gets fine pictures with this camera.

    Post your Train shots!

I tried to get a nice shot of the CP in Duplainville, WI last week at it's crossing with the CN, but a CP signal maintainer told me to leave. His edict was direct, but respectful. I managed to get a grab shot at a public grade crossing, but had no time to cross the tracks to the sunnier side...

    Your Best D5100 Photos

Took this with my kit lens, looking down into a stream in WI.

    At my friends house

Nice model trains! I rebuilt a troublesome industrial spur on my N Scale road a while back and shot these before and after photos. The result is much improved -- nothing "goes on the ground" anymore, railroad talk for "derailing". :)

    Pop Up Flash Irritation

Sometimes when I'm shooting outdoors using the Auto setting standing 30 to 40 Feet from a somewhat dark subject on a bright day, the pop up flash jumps to attention to help. It makes me jump too, as I never expect it and it hits the bill of my ball cap! I know how to defeat the flash (and I...

    Post your Train shots!

Found Norfolk Southern's Erie Heritage unit in Asheville, NC this afternoon, but it was trailing. Oh well, a trailing Heritage unit is better than no Heritage unit. :) I got a "going away" shot too, which didn't turn out too badly considering. I had good light this day.

    Post your Train shots!

Here's what's known in railfan circles as a "critter", a small industrial locomotive. Taken in Laurenburg, NC several years ago. This guy would look great in my yard. :o [Nikon N2020, 50mm Lens, Fujichrome]

    Post your Train shots!

While we are thinking of yellow and green, here's a low rez scan of C&NW Train 599 headed west at Barrington, IL past the coach yard. [Nikon EL-2, 50mm Lens, Kodachrome] 599 always carried a lot of auto parts for the Chevy plant in Janesville, WI; the plant has since closed.

    Post Your Heavy Equipment Shots!

That's great Rick M --an NYS&W SD-40 variant of some sort. I lived in northern NJ and abandoned NYS&W track ran past my apartment. A few years after I moved, they rebuilt the line and stack trains were then rolling past the old place. Figures, right? :( Here's an old shot taken in the...

    D5100 Image Comment Function

How many of you use the D5100's Image Comment function? It allows the entering of up to 36 characters, which becomes repeating metafile data on each shot until edited or switched off. I find that the "keypunching" takes a bit of time, so I've not utilized the function as designed. However, I...
