How about an old Train Station. This one is in Palmyra PA and is now used as a Model Train Store.

This one is actually from Strasburg. ... I like going there from time to time just to shoot. I was not that close to him but used my lens to reach out and get the shot. I find that I get better people shots that way. I am not that good at getting shots up close and personal so like my long lens.

The EBT cap fooled me! Another good use of a telephoto for sure.

It never fails...,

Find a great spot, nice backdrop, great weather, clouds and sun to your back. But no Train!

HDR bridge with CPL,

give me your location, put you ear to the track and wait. :)

Funny you should mention that - yesterday some one told Chris to do that after he walked in to Bru's Sports Bar and the train came by about 5 minutes later. He had looked down the tracks before coming in the building and saw nothing.

Here's one taken at Melrose, NC in 1986 on what was the steepest standard gauge railroad grade in the U.S. on Saluda Mountain in western NC. Nikon N2020 on K-64. Again, sorry about the lousy scan quality. You can see a portion of the grade in this photo. I'm standing on the "escape track" which was provided for trains that came downgrade at excessive speed. There was a timing circuit in place to calculate the speed of descending trains. If all was well, the turnout moved to the main track. Sadly, Norfolk Southern since quit service on this line, though they have left the track structure in place if it's needed again some day. It was a very expensive line to operate, so trains now run east of Asheville via Old Fort, NC.

So my 5yr old son and myslef are out walking the trails here in Kansas and we stumble upon a rail road track and what do you know I hear the horns a blaring and coming around the corner is this beautiful train, scare the bejesus out of my son but I was still able to get this great shot. I converted it into HDR using CS4 because for some reason HDR trains just look cool to me. Thanks

What you saw was, Union Pacific's 1996 "Southern Pacific" heritage unit on the head end (lucky dog)

Here's one I took back in 2009 (Pre-Nikon days) with a point and shoot Kodak. Have not been able to catch it again since 2009.

Thanks Axeman! I was looking at Rookie's photo and thinking, "What in the heck did he catch on the head end of that train?!" I'd have never guessed it.

Heck, Rookie and his son go out and bag a special unit without any preparation! Me, the lifelong railfan has spent hours and miles trying to find a Norfolk Southern Heritage unit with no luck!

I just completed a project called Solo Photo Book Month. My book is called Iron Veins so I guess this is a great place to post it. You can find it here The LIPG SoFoBoMo Project along with general information about the project. If you have time please take a look and let me know what you think. You will see some of the photos I have posted here used in the e-book.

Very nice pics Alan. I'm sure you had a great time making this project come through.

Now find another one!
