Here's one of my favorite photos, taken in the mid-90s at Mountainair, NM at the summit of the Santa Fe's Belen Cutoff on their mainline. Kodachrome 64, Nikon N2020, 80-200mm Nikkor Zoom.

Thank you Rick M. There have been some rare moments in my decades of rail photography when I've suffered from "Buck Fever", when a shot is so lovely, so perfect that my hands shake as I try to trip the shutter at the optimum moment. This was one of those, yet all turned out okay.

It's interesting too how sometimes a scene that lacks people can evoke strong memories, where a photographer can recall every detail of the moment many years afterward.

This is another favorite shot that evokes happy memories:

BethlehemPA for posting.jpg

It was taken in Bethlehem, PA in the early '80s in the evening after a day of railfanning with good friends. The train was barely rolling, so timing wasn't critical. The train is crossing over the Lehigh River from the former Jersey Central main to the former Reading and is about to bang across the former Lehigh Valley main. Of course, all was Conrail at this time. Kodachrome 64, Nikon N2020, 50mm.

My world stopped for 1/125th Sec. that fine evening thirty years ago and I've cherished the shot ever since.

I am a new member and like train photos. My name here '3rdtrick' is what we call night work on the railroad. Here are a few of mine that I know a few members will recognize.

Nikonpup asked about the insulator colors on the line wires. The glass insulators are green or clear depending on when or by whom they were made. They are used for individual low voltage circuits controlling the signals. The top two wires with the cutouts are power and could be 6600 volts or so. The lower tan ceramic insulators could be low voltage (120 volt) power or possibly a carrier system for phone circuits. It is quite likely that they are still live circuits.

Another westound at Harpers Ferry, WV, but on the bridge over the Potomac and in the overcast. Looks like that lead unit needs some paint.

This is a favorite spot that time has forgot -- Balcony Falls, VA on the former C&O main, complete with a vintage depot and coaling tower. Unfortunately no train came along during our brief stop.
