On a beautiful Saturday April 9, 1988 at Attalla, AL, 1218 is making her first trip of the season on a Birmingham <=> Chattanooga run. [Kodachrome 64, Nikon N2020]

Got out trackside today for the first time in many months. Caught NS 191 crossing the Congaree River in Cayce, SC. 191 was late departing, which caused me to lose a shot at another spot with NS's Erie Heritage Unit leading a freight. :( Oh well, that's railfanning.

My hunt for Norfolk Southern's "Heritage Unit" for the Southern Railway always seems star-crossed, with the locomotive not well positioned. It happened again this evening, with its nose coupled to another unit and its nose door open. Can't complain too much though.

While not a Heritage unit it is a second generation EMD SD40-2. I love the Rio Grande inspired livery the Wheeling & Lake Erie uses. Found this guy while I was detouring through Carey OH.

Those are pretty neat pictures Sandpatch. Any backstory to them. Looks like someone hit the caboose knocking it off the tracks. Hope the crews involved were OK.

At this late date, I can no longer recall the cause, but I seem to remember that the crews were unhurt. I did a quick Internet search on the wreck, but couldn't find anything.

I'm finding that I took many more b&w pictures that I thought. To save myself from scanning exhaustion, I figure to scan them now and edit later, except for those that I want to post here. It's been fun going through these.

I can understand not remembering something so long ago. One of my medical conditions is CRS. Now what did I post here about?

I think your black & white work is great. Not sure what you've done to edit them, but whatever it is you are very good at it. :encouragement:

Thank you. I'm sure other people could do a lot better. I think the emulsion is suffering some sort of spotty degradation on a portion of my negatives, leaving hundreds of oddly shaped white spots all over the images. Others have a lot of dust spots, regardless of how much I use my rocket blower to clean them. All require a bit of brightness and contrast adjustment.

Here's Black River & Western's No. 60 taking a train out of Flemington, NJ with L.V. Rockafellow at the throttle in July 1976. Happily, No. 60 still serves on the road.

Taken in 1975 at North Western Station in Chicago were these time exposures using Plus-X 125 ASA film. I forget if I brought a tripod along or if I braced the Nikkormat FTn on ironwork. Everything that appears is gone today, even the classic station opened in 1911 which was replaced with a modern one.

New Jersey's Black River & Western once operated a vintage Pennsylvania Railroad "doodlebug", built by Brill in 1930. Powered by a 6-Cyl. Hamilton diesel with a 4-Cyl. Waukesha diesel for excitation and battery charging, and two-chime horn, she sounded as fine as she looked. The 4666 survives today on the Allentown & Auburn in Topton, PA. I think I posted some of these pictures a while back, but I recently re-scanned the negatives. These were taken at Hudson, OH in July 1976 and Alco's presence was strong. Conrail is only four months old, but the paint shops have been busy with their stencils. [Nikkormat FTn]
