What I can estimate is that the 1 car that is running on the 2 mile loop on any day might return in as little as 20 minutes or as long as 50 minutes. If it ever exceeds 10mph, I'm surprised. Those are beautiful @BF Hammer! I'm guessing that it runs at 10-15 MPH? Yeah, I've got to get up there to ride.
Four miles from home I crossed the WSOR track east of Sun Prairie, with a train moving my way. Trains move slow on those rickety old wooden ties that have to be 100 years old by now. I drove into town the long way due to road closures, positioned at Railroad Street and waited. That is the Chase grain elevator in the background that I shared a photo of last month.
The distant one is the (historic) grain elevator. What you see closer in range is Sun Prairie Concrete and their mixing plant. That is who the cars were picked up from.Very nice @BF Hammer. The grain elevator does make for a nice composition and small railroads like the WSOR are fun to shoot. What is the tall structure further away in the distance? Looks like a grain or maybe coal elevator?
Very interesting. ThanksMy Father, his older brother and their father were all Train Drivers here in NSW Australia when the State Government used to run the Freight and regional Passenger services.
My Grandfather born in 1889 and died 1964 aged 74 retired from his shift as a Train Driver sometime between 1953 and 1957 as the Locomotive that he performed his last shift on was put out of service.
The 3237 began around 1911 to 1957 but it was refurbished after 2 and a half decades on the Lachlan Valley Railways doing special steamer runs for tourists so I was happy to hear the old girl was still being used.
After My Grandfather's retirement, he set about building his own Steam Engine, carriages and tracks to run around his house in Kempsey NSW. I too loved this old steam train and my dad and his brother wanted to keep it but neither had anywhere to store it. My Grandma sold the train after Grandpa died as kempsey was a River town that flooded regularly and she was concerned that it would get damaged.
The first Photo is my Grandpa in the Mid 50's driving his last shift
The Second Photo is my Dad with Pop's Locomotive in front of his old Garage in Kempsey. Dad knew how to operate the engine as he was also a Train driver pushing Steam engines and Diesel Locos as well
The 3rd pic is me around 4 years of age driving the steam train with all the locals kids yearning for a ride....Grandpa had the train tracks all around his suburban yard and house.

Oh, yes, I see it now. This building also is there in the background of the 1987 photo you shared to me ...
Those are fine memories and wonderful photos. That's some amazing equipment your Grandfather built! I'm guessing the steamer was oil fired?
