These were Baldwin DT-6-6-2000s and the EJ&E was by far the largest buyer of them at 26 units. The "J" was a good Baldwin customer and found them well suited for lugging heavy steel mill tonnage, as well as road switching. After a decade of service, the J decided to remove the less-than-satisfactory Baldwin
606SC engines and replace them with EMD 567s. The flared perimeter around the base of the hoods you can see was added during the rebuilds, as the 567 was a wider engine and needed a hood with greater space.
The big Baldwins were nearly gone when I started taking pictures, so I treasure this one. My mother called these Pushmi-Pullyus, as per Dr. Doolittle.
