Post your Moon Shots

Thanks Roy... Got some new lenses and am finally feeling like I've learned a bit. Felt like I hit a wall before, plus being busy kinda sucked the fun out. Still have yet to take a good bird shot though!

It took some to find the right settings to get a reasonable shot at 600mm. I tested the lowest shutter VR helps and it's not that low when shooting 600mm with this cam. The increase in pixels implies I need to increase my shutter too. Below 1/80s it's insanely difficult to shoot without blur at 100%.

Still testing how to get most detail out of a shot using deconvolution.

I finally had a chance to put Don K's method of setting the camera to "P" mode to get a moon shot. The sky wasn't exactly clear, but still I think I got a fairly decent shot handheld.

Amazing difference.
I find you need a shutter speed of at least 1/200 sec to get max detail. The earth rotation has an affect at speeds below that. Deconvolution kind of works but the images can end up looking a touch over sharpened.

Deconvolution is indeed not easy to get right. It's amazing what detail can be resolved out of the blurred parts using this technique. I never got a that detailed shot of the moon with the Tam, certainly not at 600mm.

It's a promising "sharpening" technique for all my shots since it does actually sharpen them. It'll only require loads of practice.

The 1/200s limit might explain why I got that many blurred shots at lower speed and it could have more to do with rotation than the VR.

Btw; a trick I also use when processing these shots is lower the contrast in post before adjusting luminosity and pull detail.
