Day 24 - L'amour

Are the photos cliche? Yes. Is the sentiment? No. Spent the evening with my love of some 22+ years tonight, enjoyed a mess of cajun cuisine, shared some laughs, and worked these photos in really quick like at the end of the evening.

Basically, I was just dabbling with ring placement, getting the right words to be legible etc. on a smaller Bible I had around the house. These were shot with the nifty fifty and heavily cropped, but I could probably get a lot closer with the 18-55 kit lens, as it would cut about .6 feet off of the minimal focal distance. The 2nd shot, I actually messed a bit with a tilt-shift blur and kind of overdid it a bit, but I was just testing the range of that type of editing. I like 1 a bit more than 2, but the 3rd is the one I like of this series.

I was also messing with settings to change the color of the gold a bit, whiten the page, yellow the page a bit... again, just testing should I ever need to snap a similar shot for a client in the future. I definitely need a little better lighting and, perhaps, a raynox macro filter (if not a macro lens). See, there I go, trying to justify a new lens already! Gotta remind myself about those priorities again!

Day 16 - Remember when...

Got the chance to capture my boy indulging in one of his loves... and I'm so glad he loves to read! Sometimes, I think YouTube and Netflix and Satellite TV has robbed our youth of so much imagination.

The first two photos are just different edits of the same shot. The third picture is a slightly different angle with it's own edit. Opinions? Not sure I really like the angles at all, but it was a quick idea and setup.

It's not an impressive pic, to say the least. Today, I was shooting more for the opportunity to dabble a bit in editing, and a specific idea/skill I wanted to attempt for myself. With that goal in mind, I'm pleased with the baby steps I took today.

I like the idea and the photo as well. I think it would have been cool though, if you had had the base of the piece in the mirror image as well.
But nice shot :)

That was actually a limitation of the mirror, because of the shape of the base, it would only stand on it's own leaned slightly back. But I did try!!

Day 25 - Other priorities...

Well, it ended up being 65 degrees today, which isn't bad at all for a Saturday in January! ESPECIALLY since we had wind chills below zero just a few days earlier... Anyway, I spent the day on the motorcycle, and purposefully left the camera behind so I wouldn't be stopping every 2 minutes. Today was for the joy of the ride!! Along the way, I saw at least 3 different hawks, so when I got back home, I headed back out in the 4-wheeled cage to see if I could spot any, and though I spent about 30 minutes looking, the light began to fail and I had no luck at all. I did stop to try to get a couple of shots of an abandoned house, but as I had to stop on the side of the highway, I stood out a bit and was asked to move on. Not sure if they were the original owners or just concerned neighbors, but I didn't ask, just agreed with a smile and a wave. It was low light by then, so they didn't come out so great. Nor did I get the chance to switch to my nifty fifty, so SORRY for the couple of blah shots.

Tried to get a redeeming shot after I got home, highlighting the wife's favorite CCW as compared to mine.

Day25-3.jpg

Interesting note, as I wanted to test the high ISO performance of my D3100. I shot the last shot at ISO 1600 with my nifty fifty and speedlight. I did edit a bit for sharpness/noise, but it didn't take much at all to make the photo MORE than presentable!

I have the same Taurus 9MM Sweet little carry weapon. Open carry is legal here in Alabama and when I go hiking in the woods shooting with my Nikon I do have this on my side. People pretty much are a lot nicer when they see me out and about. I have a KelTec P-32 for those time I want CCW

I believe the abandoned house shots would be a good subject for HDR, in the right light.

Day 26 - Twilight Tree

Full day of BACA today, but got home around sunset and the tree just up the street caught my eye because the light was hitting it just right. Wanted to mess with the OnOne Perfect Effects 8 a bit, thought I saw some things I could play with to make the tree look like it was a pic ripped out of an old book, perhaps forgotten in a basement for a few generations... (yeah, I think like that sometimes)

Anyway, here's the before pic (just some basic LR tweaks, vignette gave it a near halo effect), followed by the "after I played with it". Nothing fancy, one of the presets with a bit of contrast and clarity tweaking.

Good job.

After you mentioned BACA recently I have been doing a little research on that organization. What I have found is that it is a wonderful group. I want to thank you and your fellow bikers for the work you are doing.

Bikers Against Child Abuse International

It's one of those "Hate why we exist, but love what we do" type of organizations, and the heroes are the little ones that stand strong. We're all just the tools used to achieve that end. ;)

I, and all the rest, appreciate your support!

I second that! I'm from all the way over in Denmark. But the story about you guys have reached me anyways. As you say, pretzel, the fact that there is any use for what you do, is horrible. But I respect that you guys take action and support the kids so their voice can be heard.
Good job indeed :)
