Day 18 pics will be posted as soon as the server switch is complete. As of yet, it won't let me upload .jpg files, but rather labels them as invalid image files. :)

STAY TUNED!

Day 18 - Same old story, all new crowd.

Had the honor of snapping pics for the Baptism Bash at LifeChurch Jenks this weekend, but before it got started, I had the opportunity to snap a few pics of the P&W band doing their intro song. This week was a cover of "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics. Let me tell ya, these folks know how to make your head bob! I already had my settings dialed in for the pool they had set up, so didn't make any changes other than turning off the speed flash and dropping the shutter speed. Still a LITTLE dark, but caught enough light to share the feel. This ain't your grandpa's church!

ISO 800, f4, 1/60 with the nifty fifty 1.8g

I like the lighting to the left 2/3 of the pic, but the lead vocalist stepped right into a shadow. Still messing with trying to draw her out a bit, but it adds all sorts of noise at this point.

Day18-1.jpg

Obligatory "rock that guitar" shot!

Day18-4.jpg

Here's a couple of the photos I snapped during the baptism bit. I was nervous as it was my first indoor shoot with the speed flash. The church had me upload the pics to a public photobucket, so should be alright to share... One I converted to B&W as I felt it added to the "story" feel. (Thinking of converting it to vertical to lose the extra dead space, but might have to make it a custom sizing) The other is just the "after dunk" shot everyone stopped for. :) I was careful to pick a couple of shots that didn't include kids. Once I see what they post, I may link to those later for C&C. Not TOO bad for my first indoor bit with the speedlight, eh?

Little different crop of the B&W, think it fits better? I kinda like it a little better... Then I lean back toward the one with the negative space to offset. Good thing I can save both versions!

Day 19 - Back yard birdin'...

...and a dog. BUSY day, so I just ran out into the back yard to enjoy the 64 degree day for a moment or two.

1st, the larger of my two pups lookin' vicious as she terrorizes the local stick population. Kinda reminds me of the shots Wud takes of her pups, but this one wouldn't put any fear in me. ;)

Day19-1.jpg

Then a couple of the "yard birds" that frequent the birdie condos. They're really European Starlings. Not a native species, but it's estimated that their population here now exceeds 200 million... There are some days that I think that's just counting the ones on our street.

Day19-3.jpg

Day19-4.jpg

Nothin' fancy, but I got some shots. :)

Day 20 - You gonna clean that up?

So, along Route 66 between my small town and Tulsa, there's a large metal sculpture of a buffalo. It's actually quite a nice statue, but... well... the artist made it with a lifted tail, which really only happens when they defecate. I have taken to calling it "The very rarely seen Poop-Tail Buffalo!"

Anyway, to make a long story longer... I hadn't had the opportunity to shoot anything today, and I've always wanted to get a shot of this sculpture some day. As it was a holiday, I got to skip out a bit earlier than normal, and had the chance to catch a bit of a Poop-tail Profile against the sunset, and being as how rush hour was much less "rushy" today than normal, it was easy to pull over and take the shot! It's not exactly a perfect side view, so you can't see the full glory of the poop tail itself in action, but that's the price you pay to catch the glow of the sunset in just the right spot... I promise I'll get a different shot soon so you can share in our (laughing) pride!

Day20-1.jpg

Basic LR5 edits only, with a bit of crop and straightening.

Just for laughs, here was the first snap I tried to get... can't even put this in the "Almost" thread, as it was just a bust. If ya look real close, you can see the sculpture back in behind this fast moving service truck...

Day 21 - Mini-me wannabe?

I'm envious of the macro shooters, no doubt about it. I just don't see a macro lens dropping into my arsenal any time soon, especially since I've set my heart on the Nikkor 105. ;) D7100 first. I've gotta keep the goal in sight. D7100! Then, someday... No. No. NO! Priorities!! D7100, then I've got to add the NIK collection permanently to my collection. After that, a REAL tripod, and a rapid strap, and the lenses I need to solidify my hopes for a fairly steady side business in portraits... THEN, someday...

Anyway, I ramble... Here's my faux macro shots for the night. Somewhat heavily cropped, but it's as close as I'll get for now. The first one was my fave, the other two were just dabbling with odd angles. SB700 in combo with ISO 400, f8, 1/200 at 300mm with my 70-300 VR.

Nice. The Nik collection is something that should be in everyone's arsenal. After learning and using it I now use it on every photo. Even my wife is using it all the time.
I recently moved up to the D7000 but am seriously thinking of selling it and getting the D7100.

Day 22 - Inspiration

Why do I title today "Inspiration" you might ask? There are a couple of reasons. First, seeing Lawrence's shot of a candle reminded me I had been wanting to try the same thing. Soon, I want to try shooting a LOT of candles, but for now... I just want to learn the capabilities of my camera in new settings. Soon I'll test faces with only a candle for lighting, etc... but for today, a candle (thanks for the inspiration, Lawrence!). Secondly, while shooting these pics, it served to remind me that, at times, we come across people in dark places... maybe just a foul day, perhaps just a rough spot in their lives, or maybe, like an abused child, right in the middle of the darkest of nights. There may even be times that we are the only light they may see, whether it be in that moment or in their lives. If you're that light in the darkness... well... where are you leading them?

It's something to think about.

As a neighbor? As a co-worker? As a friend? As a defender? As a... parent? Wow, deep thoughts, and I'm not even Jack Handy. Ok, the humor didn't fit there...

Day22-2.jpg

Day22-1.jpg

Make tomorrow a good day. Be that brief spot of light for someone. You never know the impact it will have... Plus, I can pretty much guarantee it'll make your own day better too!

(ISO 400, f8, 1/200 - shot with my 70-300VR because I was being lazy and would rather zoom than move around)

Very nice..

I have found that this forum has given me more inspiration and has pushed me into trying things. Seeing all the great photos every day has been quite an education.

Just think what that shot would look like as a macro. Just throwing it out there. Also the DCR-250 I use from Raynox is 80-90 bucks. Cheap enough to maybe hold you over?!

Day 23 - Dream... dream BIG.

Day23.jpg

It's not an impressive pic, to say the least. Today, I was shooting more for the opportunity to dabble a bit in editing, and a specific idea/skill I wanted to attempt for myself. With that goal in mind, I'm pleased with the baby steps I took today.
