I have an old 50D that I mostly just use when doing headshots of my little monsters. The 35G I have to be too close or else crop alot so usually use the 50D but I like the 35G for most things.

Nice shot, I like that one.

Just wondering why you don't seem to like your 50G, I don't have that lens yet, though I do have the 35 1.8G and love it.

I have the 35mm DX, 50mm FX, and the 40mm DX Micro - here is my take on the ~$700 I've spent on these lenses.

1. 50mm I have not been as impressed with this lens. The 35mm nails the focus nearly every time, but the 50mm just doesn't seem as precise or accurate. Same camera, same person, same technique, results are just not as consistent on the 50mm.

2. 35mm, great lens! Super sharp and I have nothing negative to say.

3. 40mm is everything I loved about the 35mm DX and I can shoot macro photos.

My conclusion: If I could only have one of these lenses it would be the 40mm Micro. Eventually I would still pick up the 35mm. As for the 50mm I would skip it. I keep trying to find the love that I think should be there for the 50mm but I just can't seem to.

The lens produces a good sharp picture, but it has been in my experience inconsistent. The 35mm prime just can't seem to miss and always nails the shot. The 50mm I have to take a few and see if it focused where I told it to. This last picture took three attempts to get the focus where I kept telling the camera to focus. I've used this lens on both my D5100 and my D7100 and the only reason I keep it is if I want a prime with that extra reach. However, I know that I have to verify it did what I asked it to. It's a good lens but not a great lens IMO. I think it was Rocky that arrived at the same basic conclusion as I did if you want another opinion of the lens, but I know plenty that do love the lens.

With the 50, I liked the portrait type results (though some times I had to back up too much). It worked fine as a Prime. I was taking product shots here at work and was having to back up too much and then crop (small parts) so I tried the 35mm. It seemed to produce images (sharper) so I kept using it.

Not too long ago, I did some flowers with the 50, close up, and it was pointed out that the images were a little soft. I went back and adjusted to a stopped down aperture and took samples of both 50 and 35 and they were same...

I have good luck stopped down or when I am back from the subject but as I get close and use a more open aperture, I believe (at least in my case) that the 50mm shallow dof works against when using it "as a macro" more so than the 35mm. I in essence find my 35 is used much more than my 50mm.

Thanks for adding to this RockyNH. Maybe that's what I need to be doing is stay away from anything macroish since it just doesn't nail the focus. Maybe, just maybe, you have shown me the light on where I might find some love for this lens after all.

Day 168 - Star Trail, Yellowstone National Park

Have not posted in a couple days. The wife and I went on a photography trip to Yellowstone and have been away from technology for a while. We finally arrived into some technology, the internet, and their wireless was hit by lightning two days prior to our arrival so it is now hit or miss on the connectivity. So while I am connected for the moment I can try to catch up for the last couple days. Day 168 is my first attempt at a star trail. This was a three minute exposure and other than the moon there really wasn't any light pollution. Sadly, I did not get to do the Milky Way as the clouds started to build and wiped out my chance for later that night into the morning.

Day 169, 2013 Yellowstone National Park

Orange Bacterial Mats - The crazy orange coloring is from the bacteria that lives in the sulfur water runoff.

Morning Glory - This is one of the hot water vents that is always changing color based on the temperature of the water and the affect of ambient temperatures around the pool. The picture I saw that drew me here had a blue center and a bright yellow outer. Now, due to temperature changes, the center and a beautiful green and yellow turning orange outer.

Day 170, 2013 - Mammoth Hot Springs Terrace, Yellowstone National Park

Internet is getting really iffy again.

These are pictures from the Mammoth Hot Springs Terrace. They are always changing colors based on the constantly changing paths of the water from the hot springs.

Day 173, 2013 - The Sink Canyon - Landing, Wyoming

Spending time in Lander Wyoming. We headed into a state park here called Sink Canyon. This river flows down and into the rock and then two hours later reappears further down the mountain.

Really cool bug with crazy veining in its wings.
