I always browse online to get some creative juices flowing. Or revisit old places that you have been before and look for new angles, depths, colors, patterns, moods, anything that you didn't capture before! :) Great shots BTW. Have fun and keep shooting!

Edit: I should add.... Thank you for posting shots everyday! It helps others get ideas too.

I like going back to places I've already been and trying to get something new. Trains your brain to look harder for those shots.

Thank you!

I was looking for some good shot opportunities in town today when I drove by the skate park and saw a bunch of guys there. I decided to stop there and try my hand at some action shooting with my 55-200mm. Now, action shots aren't exactly the strong suit of the D3100, as it has a really slow burst rate and a tiny buffer. I did pull it off, but I really had to focus on anticipating the action. I walked out there with the camera and everybody got really excited. They started suggesting different angles for me and showing off different tricks. They were totally playing to the camera, and it was brilliant. They were as interested in getting me the shot as I was, which was really cool. My only difficulty was the lens. I've had a lot of fun with the 55-200mm, but I found that today it just wasn't the right lens. It could zoom way in, which was nice but not really necessary most of the time because they were setting the shots up for me and I could get fairly close. The real problem was that I just couldn't get wide enough in certain situations. I had to back away so I didn't remove extremities in the shots. I feel like a 16-85mm or 24-70mm would have been a much better lens for this duty. Other than that, it was a great time and I came away with some good stuff.

Try the 18-105. It's a fantastic lens for the price! Nice action shots too.

I have definitely thought of that one too. I just liked the idea of the 16-85mm a bit more because I'd like the ability to go just that little bit wider (I do a lot of landscape and cityscape stuff) and I rarely really need to go tighter than 85mm. I'll be getting the 70-300mm for when I need something longer. But I'll definitely test that one out when I test out the 16-85mm at the camera shop!

I have to agree, I can get some very top quality shots from an 18-105. Just have to learn how to get past its limitations. I usually take that lens with me if I'm going on a quick trip or whatever, it's light, sharp, range is decent and it's cheap! If I break it it won't cost an arm and a leg to get another one! lol
The thing about photography is to learn how to use your equipment to suit your needs. Looks like you have done that to get these excellent images from the 55-200 and the D3100. To me, that's what makes a excellent photographer.

On a second note, I have heard good things about the 16-85mm.
Have you looked at the 18-200? It's not as wide but you wouldn't be carrying as many lenses with you....

Yeah, it's all about adapting. A lot of times, you won't have that perfect setup that you need but you have to work around it. That's exactly what I tried to do.

I've thought of that lens as well, and I'm going to be checking it out. I'd just like to be able to go just a bit wider than that 18mm. Sometimes that extra little bit makes the difference. I've been told by many people that the 16-85 is a really great and underrated lens. I've gone back and checked my EXIF data on a lot of shots and I have found that I usually shoot wide, and often I wish I had more. When I do shots with more bokeh, portraits, or just general close up stuff, I find that I like having something tighter than 55mm but wider than 100mm. That's sort of my justification for the 16-85mm, but I'm definitely keeping the others in mind. I also don't really mind carrying an extra lens or two.

I was a little concerned I wouldn't be getting any shots today. I was busier than busy. The fiance and I are making a quick trip to my parents' house up north to take care of some stuff. Because of work obligations, we didn't get out of town until 6:30 PM, which put us here at 11:30. In the last few minutes before midnight, I set up the camera on the tripod and grabbed this shot. This is with the 18-55mm kit lens on my D3100. It's at 800 ISO for 30 sec, f/3.5.

I'm going to have it printed and framed for my folks.

Thanks, I'm really happy with it. The night is pitch black up here. The clouds are covering the moon, so I needed a flashlight just to get out to the spot where I took the shot. Fell in the snow a few times, but I finally got out there. I needed to use the flashlight to light up the house so I could frame the shot and get the autofocus to lock in, then I just played with it for a while. The D3100 won't go any slower than 30 sec, so I had to keep it wide open and played with the ISO. I'm pretty proud of what I walked away with.

Well this is unexpected. My parents' house up north is being featured in a home magazine, and because of the shot I did last night, I get to do the photos for the article! So most of the shots I took today were for that, but I edited a few to more my style.
