So, to improve my interior low light capabilities I recently purchased a 35mm f/1.8 from Best Buy. I've spent a lot of time with it in the past few days, and I'm pretty impressed with it's capabilities. In low light, I rarely need to go above 800 ISO. It needs to be pretty damn dark before I need to go above 1600. It's also a great city photography lens. I've been having fun wandering the alleys in my city and it's a good length to capture what I'm looking for. Unedited, the CAs are definitely noticeable, but I just fix that in Lightroom and I'm happy with it.

I also got a BlackRapid Sport that I am loving. I should have had a strap like this a long time ago. The padding and build quality are fantastic. I love how it keeps the camera out of the way but nicely accessible. It's very comfortable.

Anyway, back to the photos!

A good friend runs the little cafe in the public library, and her baby boy is just adorable. He's very photogenic and very happy.

I have discovered that I really love getting out and wandering the back alleys of the city and capturing scenes that rarely ever get seen by most people. The 35 1.8 is a great lens for this duty. Great color definition and it's nearly tack sharp, which does a great job at making the bricks stand out.

I had the opportunity to head out to the Beartooth Mountains south of me and take some great landscape shots. I still need a little practice getting them sharp with a DSLR, but initial results are promising. I had an unfortunate incident that got me stuck in two feet of hard packed, melting snow. A little work with a shovel and a Hi-Lift jack and I was home free. I was also having a couple issues with rain drops on the lens, but I managed.

Nice looking shots! Glad you are liking that fast prime. You can't beat them for indoor shots! Don't forget to add it to your sig with the other gear!

I took a lot of photos today. I did another walkabout session and I went to the annual home show. There was quite a bit to shoot.

At the home show there were a couple of very friendly malamutes.

And some very cool homemade flattened glass bottle platters.

I also took my first full-on night photo tonight. The refinery is kind of a cool subject at night with all those lights on, and it puts my 35mm to great use.

Thanks! I'm very happy with the investment. It's awesome how much just $200 has improved my capabilities. I'm also planning on adding the 50mm f/1.8 to my lineup for better bokeh shots. I might go longer, but I haven't decided yet. I'm now seeing how much difference good glass makes.

And already on it!

It's definitely going to be in my bag. I think I've narrowed down my basic lenses now. In addition to my 35mm f/1.8 (indoor/low-light), I'll be getting the 50mm f/1.8 (portraits/bokeh), the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 to replace my 18-55mm (basic walkabout/landscape/travel), and the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 to replace my 55-200 (wildlife). I think this will make for a pretty solid setup over a large focal length range.

The past few days have been busy, so I haven't had a chance to get editing done. Finally caught up! I've been dealing with some stubborn dust in my viewfinder that just will not come out. I've used the rocket air on everything, and I've cleaned the lenses really well. Can't seem to fix it. Taking it to the one camera repair shop in the state (two hours away!) tomorrow during a small trip up north.

Visited my parent's house and got some shots of some relatively everyday items, tried to jazz them up a bit.

Got out in the city again today, it was such a beautiful day. I just took a few random shots, nothing hugely impressive or major.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated! I feel like I'm improving, both in editing and in the actual photography aspect. What do you guys think? I'm heading up north into the mountains tomorrow to hopefully get some awesome landscapes. I'll be there all weekend.

I really dig Broken Glass. Also the candid is a very nice capture!

Thanks!

Funny you should say that. Broken glass is one of my least favorite shots for some reason. I'm my toughest critic though. Glad to hear it's liked! And thanks, that candid really did turn out awesome. I showed it to the girl in the photo and she just said "wow!" Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with responses like that. ;)
