I'm 99% sure it's a wasp. I know I found an ID for this type once, but can't find it now.

Woody, do you know what some of the birds are that you photograph? So many are different than what we have out here in this area - it would be nice to know once in a while if it isn't too much trouble for you. I'm curious to know what the grey and black bird is in post #477. Seems like it has a very long bill.

Sure, I know what they all are. I'll start identifying them as I post. The bird you asked about is the Clark's Nutcracker. It's a larger bird, almost the size of a crow, I'd say. The bill is formidable, for sure.
