Lol--I thought of @Bill16 when this photo showed up in my Facebook newsfeed. ;) It comes from this link.

MB D10 is in and installed......

Sweet as you say Bill16, man this thing handles now, mandatory piece of kit!

Will need to rethink my comment about not having a 2nd one when the D700 comes on board....

I will try and post a pic later if I get a chance, gotta dig out a Sony cam to take the shot, errands are everywhere at the moment......

Not to spoil your enthusiasm with the D700, things that you should consider when buying that camera are:

1. Condition of the battery.
2. Condition of the rubber around the body. Peeling is likely to happen.
3. hot shoe defects. I had to replace mine after owning it for 4 years.

Thanks Glenn, have 2 batteries now checking at 100%, knew about the rubber, hot tip on the hotshot did not consider.

I have the LCS calling me when the receive clean less than 50K clicks trade coming in, they expect multiple customers coming in with clean trades when the D810 is in stock in quantity. These would be studio cams I am told. This LCS has never let me down or misled and it is where I got the D300 which is 100% spot on.

I would call KEH as a repeat customer and request pick of the EX/EX+ litter as a repeat customer. I will also be looking at a couple of D700's this w/e hopefully via C/L but I am not overly optimistic.

I am very, very fussy.

....and I mean fussy with me gear!

No worries here anytime soon for me Glenn! :) I won't be able to buy another camera for about a year or so I figure, without buying it on payments. So I'm not even really looking right now, just simi-planning, getting info and ideas buddy. :D
Who knows, by then I might be into printing my photos, and looking for higher MPs! Lol ;)

I understand Bill. I am just putting out what I have experienced as a former owner of the D700. Just like when buying older cars, there are other things that needs to be considered. :)

My D700 story is over I guess, the offer was removed and no e-mail contact. I learned something on this camera though and it seems quite a great Nikon.
Waiting for some prices to come down.

Bummer, I had 2 Craigslist deals fail this week too! Unless I here from my LCS on a clean trade in I may be waiting for KEH prices to drop a bit too.....
(There is a deal locally on a D610 that is tempting tho, but that would mean more batteries another VG and learning another layout )

Perhaps we are driving up the prices with all the D700 talk???

I appreciate it very much and comments like yours I why I started the thread. I did not know about the hot shoe issue at all and will now be wary of it. Unlike Bill I am nearly ready to pull the trigger on a deal shortly...

Thank you all for ongoing comments, appreciated even from the D700 idea haters! In fact those may be the most valuable comments of all.....

Sorry to hear your deal fell through. :(
But maybe a better deal will show up for you! :)

And here is the DXO Mark comparison between the sensors of the D610 and D700. ;)

Nikon D610 versus Nikon D700 - Side by side camera comparison - DxOMark

I'm not sure of what the comparison actually means regarding performance. Does the D610 perform better than the D3s as well? In not the D610 scores higher than the D3s and the D4s. Again, what does all of this mean? I seriously doubt the D610 sensor performs better than the D3s and D4s, which may also be the case with the D700.

I looked at the dynamic range by iso setting charts on dxo mark. D3s & D4s beat the D610. D700 does not. But that is only relevant for very low light schooting. You do see coninuous improvement with the new models. Strangely amateurphotographer.co.uk did similar tests (less results available) with different values, although clearly similar conclusions.

You are welcome. This is one of the reason why we have forums to ask questions and opinions so that we can make a sound decision. After a while once we have gained enough experience, it is nice to return the favor to others who are less informed.

A must have for me when using a full frame camera is the wider spread of the AF sections. So when I tried the D610 in the camera store, it didn't work well for me since I use single AF points to focus on a person's eye when shooting a 85mm f1.4 lens. It made it difficult to do this with the AF clusters only concentrated at the center. That was the only deal breaker for me with the D610, otherwise, it had all of the stuff that I wanted except for the lack of CF slot but that is just me being used to using CF cards.

For those who are still on the hunt, here is one for you. Keep your eye on the price.

Be clear what I see currently as best prices second hand:

D700 => 900 € (goes up to 1200€)
D600 => 1200 €
D800 => 1500 € (goes up to 2300€)
D800E => 1700 € (goes up to 2500€)

With a lot of D800 owners moving towards the D810 this is currently strong under pressure. @Bill16 I believe that saving up will also get you to buy at a better price, but I do not guarantee it.

Keep my eye on the price (and the prize)

my Mrs. just through me a wooble "why don't you just buy a new one" she said...

I decided to not try and explain ( tho that certainly opens the d610 door )

:)

Got a lead on a under 2000 click studio camera - catch is dude is moving to Canon and wants to include a couple of FX Nikon lenses I am not real interested in. The price however is right.

will take a look next week may bite and flip the glass. I am pretty firm re the glass I want next an 85 AF a 70-200 2.8 and a 28 Ai MF.

i will stay disciplined on this switch.
