Not to spoil your enthusiasm with the D700, things that you should consider when buying that camera are:
1. Condition of the battery.
2. Condition of the rubber around the body. Peeling is likely to happen.
3. hot shoe defects. I had to replace mine after owning it for 4 years.
No worries here anytime soon for me Glenn!I won't be able to buy another camera for about a year or so I figure, without buying it on payments. So I'm not even really looking right now, just simi-planning, getting info and ideas buddy.

Who knows, by then I might be into printing my photos, and looking for higher MPs! Lol![]()

My D700 story is over I guess, the offer was removed and no e-mail contact. I learned something on this camera though and it seems quite a great Nikon.
Waiting for some prices to come down.
I understand Bill. I am just putting out what I have experienced as a former owner of the D700. Just like when buying older cars, there are other things that needs to be considered.![]()

And here is the DXO Mark comparison between the sensors of the D610 and D700.

I appreciate it very much and comments like yours I why I started the thread. I did not know about the hot shoe issue at all and will now be wary of it. Unlike Bill I am nearly ready to pull the trigger on a deal shortly...
Thank you all for ongoing comments, appreciated even from the D700 idea haters! In fact those may be the most valuable comments of all.....

Perhaps we are driving up the prices with all the D700 talk???
You are welcome. This is one of the reason why we have forums to ask questions and opinions so that we can make a sound decision. After a while once we have gained enough experience, it is nice to return the favor to others who are less informed.
A must have for me when using a full frame camera is the wider spread of the AF sections. So when I tried the D610 in the camera store, it didn't work well for me since I use single AF points to focus on a person's eye when shooting a 85mm f1.4 lens. It made it difficult to do this with the AF clusters only concentrated at the center. That was the only deal breaker for me with the D610, otherwise, it had all of the stuff that I wanted except for the lack of CF slot but that is just me being used to using CF cards.
For those who are still on the hunt, here is one for you. Keep your eye on the price.
