Ok. Today today I used three of the photographic P's that I can remember: Planning, Preparation and Persistence. And I still managed to mess some things up by leaving the ISO set waaaay too hight on the D90.

This is a learning thread, right?

Nikonites-12-3.jpg Sea Oats in front of a sunset, at nearly the same spot I took the Day 11 sunset.

Nikonites-12-2.jpg The Loons just wouldn't come any closer...
Nikonites-12-1.jpg An overturned tree's shallow roots. This tree was likely downed during one of the tropical storms we've had visit us in the last several years. I thought the patterns in it were interesting.

All of these photos were taken with my D90 and a 30-35-year-old Nikkor 300 f4.5 manual focus lens. All photos were also set for exposure manually without any metering in the camera. In other words, take a shot, look at the shot, change shutter speed and aperture toward a more correct exposure. And repeat until you think you've got it right and then Photoshop the daylights out of it at home.

I like all three shots but I have to ask.... Why not meter?

Yup, the D90 will meter only with AF, AF-I, AF-D and AF-S lenses. With manual focus lenses, there's no metering. Hey, I guess that's what the rear LCD is there for anyway... Isn't that what we do, even if she does meter? I know I do... Great job WM!

So much rain today and tonight that I moved a planned shot up and out of the day and into the night. There's a little bar near us called "The Oasis" and here is a picture of part of the outside. I've never been in, but often thought that it would make a great subject, with it's weathered murals on the outside of the building and all. Well here it is, at night, through a rain-streaked car window. I'll have to visit again in the future, both in daylight and again during darkness, to work on this as a photo subject.

Cool photo. Wonder what the inside of this place holds.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find out and report back. ;)

I think I'll ask around about it's reputation before I venture in.

As small as this place is, and with as many people as I know here, I can likely find a "regular". Whether I'd go in with that "regular", however, is a different story.

Who knows, it might be a right nice place!

In the meantime, here is another photo from yesterday, a result of my experimenting with PS masking.

I loved the "it puts the dive back in dive bar". Make sure you let us know when you go.

Will do, Marilynne. I plan to invite several of my SCUBA diving friends to go with me. We all love going to a dive shop, so a dive bar should be right up our alley. Right?

Shooting for the moon...

Two shots at different exposures. I can't decide which I like better.
