Ok. Went home and retrieved my memory card for the camera and went back out. Finally found a subject about 40 before sundown, with rain and a complete overcast. Did a quick test shot and decided to go manual, also having to push the ISO to 1250 for any shutter speed close to reasonable.
First to show the overall conditions:

And now three of the subject. It wasn't happy with me approaching, but let me get to about 25 feet before he became animated.


ISO 1250 is clearly above what i can use the the D90 for cleanly, but it was necessary in that light with the lens I was using. (18-105 , f3.5-5.6).
Next time, I'll take a tripod.
