The radial bubble tracks in this piece of ice really intrigued me. It came out of one of our hummingbird feeders that froze solid last night. I shot it with my D90 and Nikkor 105 mm macro lens.

Oh, well. I took my camera into work today and left it in the car. On my way home, I passed a spot where a Great Blue Heron was perched upon a rock at the end of a small peninsula with a mist so heavy you couldn't see the the other side of the small bayou this was in.

I stopped the car, got my camera out and began approaching the bird without any reaction from the bird at all. Once I was in position for the shot, I turned the camera on and when I framed the shot, was greeted by the rude viewfinder message that I din't have a memory card installed in the camera. ::what::

I left the card in my computer at home; so there's none to blame but me. :mad:

Moral of the story? I doesn't do any good to have your gear with you if it's not all of the gear you need.

Ah WM I know how you feel I have done this so many times and its so frustrating every time! 2 card slots and I still occasionally do it. Last time was just before Christmas had lenses I might need, filters and all well checked to be sparkling clean and ready. Got there to take a shot and yep both card slots empty! Had to carry everything rest of day while out but couldn't capture one shot. Hope you can come up with another shot for today

Ok. Went home and retrieved my memory card for the camera and went back out. Finally found a subject about 40 before sundown, with rain and a complete overcast. Did a quick test shot and decided to go manual, also having to push the ISO to 1250 for any shutter speed close to reasonable.

First to show the overall conditions:

And now three of the subject. It wasn't happy with me approaching, but let me get to about 25 feet before he became animated.

ISO 1250 is clearly above what i can use the the D90 for cleanly, but it was necessary in that light with the lens I was using. (18-105 , f3.5-5.6).

Next time, I'll take a tripod.

Great suggestion, Scott, although I would nave been severly overtasked to have to think of a flash yesterday. I'd already gone out w/o a memory card in the camera.

I'm looking into using one of my old "grab-and-go!" film camera bags so that I can have extra cards and a flash ready to go very quickly. Now watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat by showing up with memory card and flash, ... but with no camera!!!! Ha-ha-ha-ha. (It helps to laugh about it.)

Don't worry I too have left my memory card at home (a few times) lol. And I have driven a few hundred km's too...
