I was looking at something else when this juvi night heron popped out of the tree right in front of me. He took one look and retreated back into the brushy shadows.

Saw two more species of woodpeckers -- the Nuttal's, male and female

and the downey, ditto

And yellow rumps everywhere

No idea what this beetle is, though I have seen several before. Hard to shoot as it seems to have a glossy secretion, likely as predator protection, that reflects wicked
