He's gotten large in the few days you've had him. Wishing your son great luck with his 4-H project.
Yes Wud the commercial farming industry makes me cringe the more I learn the sadder and more horrified I am. Watching the little girl pass was horrible and I'd have liked to put her out of her misery immediately. However, if she'd stayed at the commercial industry she would have stayed jammed in a building until she went to abattoir or if chosen to be bred she'd have spent 4yrs in a metal crate that she could never turn around in 
Hamlet is a market pig and will be sold at 4-H auction but at least the days of his life will be healthy and given the best life and experience we can give him. I'm not sure how we can expect to be healthy when the food we eat from mass commercial farming is done in the most unhealthy and horrid conditions.
I am a terrible farmer. Hamlet is the greatest personality loves to play, happily greets me, follows me around and when I stop flops down on my boots so I will scratch his side and plays dead piggy while he lays in bliss enjoying the rub LOL He is just like a very mellow well behaved puppy but he's bathroom trained himself Occasionally he goes all nuts running jumping spinning around and loves to play fetch or push/kick the ball around. 4-H Fair followed by market is going to be rough for me

sunday or easter? It can be hard when you raise an animal, friends raised a steer, everything was ok till they put it on the table. they ended up selling the meat.mmm

rotten attitudes and bad behaviour make for delicious smells and tasty dinner
nearly killed my back lowering that 29lb (13kg) beast down into my lower oven and then had to lay flat on the floor to take a photo. The smell makes it all worth it though yum!

Just thinking about you saying bye Hamlet away is hard on me too! But at least, you are giving him the time of his life. Remember that.
I grew up similar to your place (or, not all my life), living in a small farm where all animals (which wasn't like commercial farming many of course) had as much outside area as possible. Several decided they were pet animals lol. We had a domesticated turkey.... I had my own 2 pet chickens.. Also we had 2 big pigs and 1 small (not sure of the name in english, a small black spotted, big belly, small legs pic) she walked around free and were friends with the neighbors goat LOL. Yes, they meet up and walked around together most days. Pigs are very clever and very, very friendly if you just treat them well - they are almost like dogs, its pretty amazing.
I know I would have problems eating something that I knew personally.
Well if you told me that I'd be doing this 4yrs ago I'd have thought you were absolutely insane! Hubby and I grew up in town and until hubby met me he had never even gone fishing before. This is a learning journey for us. Hubby has wanted to do pigs and has been researching etc but until eldest son decided to do it as a project it hasn't happened. We do have a back garden that we made but it grows more weeds than veggies so pigs will get it this year and hopefully clean up the roots. The turkey was supposed to be Easter but Spring fever hit and he was horrible so he became dinner early. At 29lbs (13.2kgs) we have LOTS for sandwiches in the freezer And the hens are much much happier

Not sure what this is. I have been trying to capture the Northern Harrioer that has been hanging around but always seem to be without camera or long lens when it appears. My attempts at the bald eagle the other day were not great because it was just so high up and far away. Anyways I'm not certain what this was and I had to crop severely to get these but the ravens took after it chasing it off so I didn't get a better shot.
