Our town has 4 4-H groups and ours is the largest with just under 60kids. I agree Don but sometimes the responsibility can be rough. I'm not cut out to be a farmer I care too darn much about the critters in my care. The female piggy suffered from shock after the long travel on Sunday. This is our first experience with pigs and the 24hrs I spent in the barn with her trying desperately to keep her comfortable and hydrated was awful. I would have called vet and had her put out of her misery but was I convinced to just keep trying and hope for a miracle instead. She still passed and watching her suffer was horrible. I am no farmer :(

Thanx Rocky it was a rough start to keeping pigs. They are apparently very easily stressed but she was eating drinking etc I just thought she needed recovery time but instead she went into shock and there was no bringing her out of it. It was terrible. I am not a vegetarian but believe animals should be healthy, well cared for and given the best life possible with a swift low stress end. Suffering of any kind is very hard on me especially when I can see no good end. The little boy is my sons 4-H project and he is doing wonderful and now after spending so much time out there he has become my best buddy following me around and getting under foot. I never thought I'd like pigs but he has waaay too much personality :)

Pigs are very, very smart.

I totally understand what you are saying. i am the same way. I never could be a farmer, either, although I love all animals. I did emergency animal rescue for about 10 years. It really took a toll on me. It is so sad what people do to animals and how some treat them. My critters are very lucky. All four of my cats are rescues. My dog is not a rescue critter. She is a pampered pooch who sleeps on the bed every night. :) I always feel bad when Creature, all of 6 lbs, torments the dog. The other night, she jump on her while she was sleeping, attacked her and tried to get her off the bed. Jenny chose to ignore her. :)

Sorry to hear about the girl pig. Wishing your son good luck with the boy pig. Any plans on getting another girl pig?

Why yes Marilynne I found more piggies :) These were bottle babies from a small family farm and are happier healthier and much less stressed by their travels because of it :)
Kids still have not chosen names for these yet so I've taken to just calling them bacon bits
Moments after arriving- barely 5wks old I present the Bacon Bits

Balancing act

It was tough in the shade but I liked the softness of the cat against the very old weathered wood
