SamSpade's 2013 Project 365

I especially love the trees and sky in the first one. The most dramatic of the three.
Nice post processing on the second one . . . very pleasing tones.
The third one seems to lose a little bit of drama in the sky and trees . . . which is what made the first one so striking.

Considering you live in Oklahoma, I'm surprised (and happy) that the wood pile DIDN'T move!

Very nice and meticulous work!

Thank you Helene , you are always most gracious in your critiques and comments. I am still not sure what happened in the third image which was the HDR merge created from a composite of 5 images. It did lose something in post processing and I am not sure what exactly it was not the same exact result I got last night for certain. The faux color can be interesting at times for certain and I do like the results you can get. I agree with you on the second image also.

I honestly was a tad bit surprised considering the wind velocity today that the wood pile did not move myself. There are some days I honestly feel like I need a large format tripod and a cinder block to keep the camera from going anywhere.

Thank you again for your most generous comments.

You are most welcome.
I had a similar experience with HDR post processing . . . did a series of 5 shots with a neutral density filter, then merged them in photomatix. The result was an ugly green in all the shadows that could not be corrected. At least yours is pleasing to the eye . . . the composite I got was like something from an alien planet!

I actually had that happen myself last year. Same ugly green hue, I am glad I am not the only one that has happened to. I still cannot explain it.

The wind was never ending today to the point I did not want to fight it , I did take the time to sort through some things left to me by family members who are no longer with me. I thought I would share some of them with everyone.

Wow. This is pretty stunning! Is this an IR-HDR?
Thank you for sharing such a special photo, SamSpade :)

Helene it is just a standard color HDR image I actually did shoot one in IR but it is in monochrome I am still playing with it. When I am done I will upload it so you can see it. Thanks for the kind words. You are exceedingly generous :)

The IR HDR version of the same photo, It was made with a composite of 6 images there is quite a bit of a learning curve in using IR images for HDR and to be honest it I think is a very limited application, the look can have some appeal at least to me it does. But at this point I do not think it is for everything. It took quite a bit of experimentation to get this image to work.

Ok today I did some experimentation again, these images are all of the same subject. I shot photos of a wood pile from the demolition of my barn. The first one is IR which has been post processed into a color image.

The second image is the same wood pile processed normally as a monochrome image.

The last image is the IR HDR image again in monochrome.

The goal for me was to see if I can detect a noticeable improvement in definition in the image, overall the jury is still out as far as I am concerned. There are some subtle improvements but I am not sure as to how much of an improvement it genuinely makes. I am still experimenting and I want to try a few more things out before I make a final decision. Today was not really the best day at all since I had 30 mile per hour winds and things just do not hold still as can be evidenced from the trees in the background. Still the wood pile did not move which is why I chose it as a subject. LOL.

Some very good pictures in here :) I too look foreward to following this. Funny I just saw this thread now, 1 hour ago I finally ordered an IR filter, been wanting it for a long time.

For these 3 pictures, I think number 1 is absolutely beautiful. Dramatic yet soft.

Number 2, maybe the white leaves would pop out more, if they were against a darker sky?

And the last one, I cant really tell if its HDR, but looks like number 2 is better?

Nice Sam!
Forgive my ignorance, but are the last few images from the IR camera as well?

Hi Whitelight the images I posted yesterday are color HDR images shot that were not shot with my IR camera. I have been working on a couple of IR HDR images that I shot at the Botanical Gardens. I will be posting one shortly.
